Your roommate is somewhere between mildly and full-blown retarded.

Only reason golf has an argument is bc it's individual versus a roster of 23 guys for a WC team. If you're a starter or even an important contributor on a world cup team then it's the WC, if you're a backup goalie vs winning the masters or us open I'd say golf. And this is for America, everywhere else in the world just playing qualifiers for a WC winning team would be more prestigious than a golf major

If the US won a World Cup, you'd be sick of half of the starting 11 after 15 minutes, and the attention would persist for months.

Some notable facts about Tiger Woods and TV Ratings:

From January 2007 – December 2009, there has been 21 instances where a golf telecast has drawn a rating of 4.00 or better. Woods was involved in every one of those broadcasts.

In 2009, 19 golf telecasts drew a rating of 3.00 or higher. Tiger Woods was playing during 17 of those broadcasts.

Over the last 3 years, the highest rating a golf broadcast without Tiger Woods in the field received was at last year’s Open Championship, when Tom Watson was attempting to become the oldest golfer to ever win a major. That telecast received a 3.75. In that same time span, 4 different times, Sundays at NON-MAJORS that did feature Woods drew a higher rating. Two of those broadcasts came this year: Sundays at Bay Hill (4.42) and AT&T National (4.16). Woods won both of those events.

The majors saw a big viewership difference. Take the PGA Championship, which Woods missed in 2008 due to injury. Sunday drew a 2.78 rating that year. In 2009, with Woods squaring off against Y.E. Yang, it drew a 6.64, almost 2.5 times higher.

Over the last 3 years, Golf Channel has had an overall rating over 1.00 16 times. Only once did that rating come from an event not featuring Tiger Woods (Sunday at the ’09 Bob Hope Classic).

Of the 20 highest rated golf broadcasts on NBC over the last 3 years, 19 have featured Tiger Woods. The highest-rated non-Tiger event on NBC was the final round of the 2008 PLAYERS Championship (3.12). That event had less than half the viewership of their highest-rated event WITH Tiger (Sunday at the ’08 U.S. Open: 7.54). It had 1.54 million fewer viewers than the highest-rated NON-MAJOR with Tiger.

Compare a basic week-to-week difference on NBC. The final round of the Bay Hill Invitational this year drew a 4.42 rating, with over 5 million viewers. The next week, a Tiger-less Shell Houston Open drew a 2.31, with 2.64 million viewers.

Since 2007, each of CBS 15 highest golf telecasts have featured Tiger Woods. This year, Sunday at the Travelers Championship (no Tiger) pulled a 1.55 rating from 3 to 6 PM. The following week, with Woods in the field and winning at the AT&T National, CBS enjoyed a rating of 4.16.

Two weeks ago at the inaugural Greenbrier Classic, which didn't have Woods in the field, the tournament did a dismal 1.2 national rating on Sunday, despite a thrilling duel down the stretch between the hottest player in golf, young American Jeff Overton, and veteran Stuart Appleby of Australia. Appleby came from seven behind after 54 holes and beat Overton to win the tournament by a shot with a final-round 59, golf's Holy Grail score, only the fifth time that's ever been done in a tour event.

But hardly anyone was watching.

The Greenbrier Classic took the place of the old Buick Open on the 2010 tour schedule. In 2009, with Woods in the field and eventually winning, that event had a robust 3.7 rating on Sunday, triple the number for the final round at the Greenbrier.

Woods had long since finished playing when CBS came on the air both Saturday and Sunday. The rating Saturday was a 1.6, compared with a 2.4 the same tournament drew on Saturday in 2009, when Woods was high up on the leader board. On Sunday this year, the Bridgestone did a 2.3; on Sunday in 2009, with Woods ultimately winning the tournament, the number was more than double -- a 4.7 rating.

When Jordan retired from the Chicago Bulls for a second time in 1998, TV ratings for the sport plummeted. Same goes for golf when Woods is not playing or is out of contention. When Woods was sidelined with a knee injury in 2008, he missed half the season and TV ratings fell by 47% compared to 2007 for events where Woods was in the field.

Love Tiger Woods or hate him, golf fans don’t watch The Masters if the former ace is not in the hunt. With Woods completely out of contention during Sunday’s final round and on the way to his worst finish at Augusta National since turning pro, CBS viewership tanked to its lowest preliminary TV ratings since 2004, according to Bloomberg.

An average of 8.1 percent of households in the top 56 U.S. TV markets tuned in to watch Bubba Watson outlast Louis Oosthuizen in a dramatic, sudden-death playoff, CBS spokesperson Jerry Caraccioli told Bloomberg. That’s a 22 percent drop from the 10.4 ratings of a year ago, when Woods put on a late charge but fell short of 2011 Masters winner Charl Schwartzel.

Let me say it again. Golf is nothing without Tiger.

Personally...I'd take golf in a heartbeat but then again....I wasn't born outside the US. I've seen soccer matches in Argentina, England, Italy and the US and was impressed by the passion of the first three fan bases but overall it doesn't do anything for me. I do think it funny that other replies on here are about no one caring about golf if Tiger isn't playing or can't name the obscure major winners. Who can name the roster of the last WC winners? (w/o the aid of the internet!)

God, if you're a star on your WC team...you're immortal in whatever nation you're from.

England still goes gaga over 1966 far more than we do over the Miracle on Ice.

Imagine if you were from Uruguay today and won...they'd name the country after you.

Winning a major is a huge accomplshment but it's not etetched romantically in stone like the WC.

In my opinion it depends on the major, The Masters or the US Open, yes! My argument is that the World Cup is a team sport, diluting the significance of a single person winning one. golf being an individual sport makes it more prestigious for the individual to win one of those two majors.

Kind of weird to compare the two.

Are you comparing an individual winning a major to an entire team winning the World Cup? Obviously it's more prestigious for the team winning the World Cup. Like someone said the WC happens once every 4 years, there are 16 majors in 4 years.

Or are you comparing a player winning a major to an indivdual player winning a World Cup? I think being a star player on a World Cup team is also much more prestigious. I would however much rather win a major than ride the bench for a World Cup team.

Soccer is literally my least favorite sport in the world. Those fricking pussies flopping like they're fish makes me sick to my stomach.

But I'd go insane an act like I've watched soccer everyday of my life if the US won it.

Other than that, I wanna know who wins it but don't care that much.

I could name all 23 faster than I could name 23 major winners (not sure I could do that at all actually). Winning a World Cup immortalizes you as a national icon. England has won one World Cup and the captain has a massive statue outside of Wembley; you won't see that for very many golfers.

The masters is the biggest singular individual tournament in the world. Only 1 winner.
