Baseball Prospectus Midseason Top 50 Prospects

quote:

Francisco Mejia, C, Cleveland Indians

Why he’ll succeed: Rumors of his prospect demise after an admittedly putrid April/May were greatly exaggerated. He raked in June, showing off the same 7 hit/5 power combo we saw last year. That’s quite the offensive package in a catcher which he still uh, mostly is?

Why he might fail: While it’s possible we are a bit higher than the industry on Mejia’s bat, that kind of stuff happens and doesn’t really concern us. However, we might also be higher than Cleveland on his glove. That’s a bit bigger concern. Wrong or right, the frame might not hold up to a full catching schedule, and the bat isn’t as exciting as a half-time corner outfielder.

#8 overall seems pretty legit for a catching prospect.

Oh yea nice fit for Cleveland for sure. Just a steep price. Mejia was a top 10 prospect coming into this year

Cleveland has been playing Mejia in the outfield in AAA a good bit this season and it sounded like that was gonna be his position in the big league for the Indians. His bat is big league ready but he didn’t have any position to play in Cleveland. If he can’t catch his value drops significantly and it was smart for Cleveland to trade him when his value was still high. They got two good RPs one being just a rookie and the other being on a team friendly deal. Miller and Allen are both having down years and are gonna be free agents this year so the trade helps them out for the next few years. Great trade for both teams.

Question for the Dodgers fans (WestCoastAg in particular). Now that you traded for Manny, you think it means no Dozier now? I always thought Dozier was a perfect fit for the Dodgers and I think they need 2B help. But with yall trading for Manny, I'm sure you're very content with just getting him.

Focus is now on pitching. The GM said that last night on Dodger Talk radio. Gonna wait til closer to the deadline to make more moves.

No Dozier, at least until the off season. Chris Taylor will slide over to 2B. We need bullpen help

I’m a fan of neither but that is a big advantage for the Braves IMO. If I am the Mets trading those guys I want Acuna in the deal. And if he’s not I don’t want guys like Teheran and Inciarte in place of younger higher ceiling/more controlled talent.

I don’t think there’s really a deal to be made between Atlanta and the Mets for DeGrom (take out Conforto and Wheeler because that makes this insane) unless the Braves completely empty their stash of young arms and even then I don’t think it would happen

talent wise That is a no brainer for the Braves. However both of those Mets pitchers are FA next year Im pretty sure. They do need a Degrom type SP1, though.
