in fact, the entire state of Louisiana would be somewhere around 14th largest market in MLB (and that's dividing NY, LA, and Chi in half for having 2 teams).

just looked it up.

of all the cities that currently have at least one team in all 3 leagues (NFL, NBA, and MLB), only 1 city, Cleveland, has a smaller metro area population than the entire state of Louisiana.

MLB could work

if every single person counted in the New Orleans-Metairie-Slidell statistical area bought a ticket to every single home game for an MLB team, that team would rank 3rd to last in MLB attendance.

If every single person counted in the Baton Rouge metro area also bought a ticket to every single game, then that team would rank 20th out of 30 teams in MLB attendance.

if every single person in this rough area of Louisiana bought a ticket to every single home game for an MLB team, they still wouldn't crack the top 5 in league attendance

Well the hope with it would be other parts of the Gulf South showing up with decent regularity as well. Not saying that would happen but an NHL team in NOLA would become the closest team to parts of MS and AL and even some of SE Texas. Atlanta getting a 3rd crack at the NHL kind of throws a wrench in that though, and I would think Houston would get consideration over NOLA if it really came down to it.

small market mlb baseball teams struggle to get by. MLB is dominated by big market teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox

Would it? Sightlines aren’t the same as in basketball. SKC is a bottom third arena in the NBA.

NOLA doesn’t have enough big money people or a big enough market to be a 3 sport town.

If you ask nhl officials, they’d much rather have a team in Nola over Houston for the sure fact that they can host all star games and other events in the city.

This is a once every 20 years thing. You really don’t think Houston can support an NHL all star game?

shouldn't it be ok to be bottom 3 in attendence since we'd be one of the last into the league regardless? someone has to be bottom 3!!

If anything go with a AA Minor League team that can be in the Southern League with Biloxi, Pensacola etc...

This is the way. NO probably needs a downtown park, and a Double A facility can be done on a much smaller footprint than MLB.

Need to see some math for this. Not making any sense.

I would love a hockey team and would 100% buy season ticket. Wish we could get a AA here and actually get some use out of zephyr field.

that's just it.
it would take literally every single person counted in the census for that combined statistical area just to get up to bottom 3.

you have to have a very large population base to find enough people that can:
A. have the disposable income to go to that many games
B. has the free time to attend that many games
C. wants to attend that many games

Louisiana already buys:
708,000 tickets to LSU football (total attendance 2024)
630,113 tickets to Saints games (total attendance 2024)
689,400 tickets to Pelicans games (total attendance 2024/2025)
458,000 tickets to LSU baseball (total attendance 2025)

now you'd need sell another 1 million+ tickets on top of all of that just to bring up the rear in MLB.

That would be very difficult to do in a state with only 4.5 million people.

not true.
We can not sell any tickets and still be a bottom 3.

That place is probably outdated for a modern MiLB facility

Agreed. Although I also like the idea of having the park near Algiers if only to build a retro jewel box stadium that would blend into the neighborhood. You can turn it into the Wrigleyville of the South.

just re-read what I wrote, and holy shite I butchered the hell out of my description

that entire area of Louisiana has fewer people than Atlanta does within a 25 mile radius of their ballpark.
Atlanta currently ranks 5th in MLB attendance.

NHL has half the number of home games and half the seating capacity. Somewhat more viable but still a huge longshot.

NHL team would be better, but sadly it wouldn’t last here

I would love an NHL team. Hockey is a GREAT sport to follow.

The NHL in NOLA is a big long shot… BUT… they could have the next best thing. If Houston gets a team… why not put their AHL affiliate in New Orleans? That’s doable in theory. The AHL is high quality hockey. The trick would be finding an arena for it.

If you’re “putting things into Zephyr Field”, aren’t you admitting it’s outdated?

I’ve been to over a hundred ballparks. The Shrine was nice…about 20 years ago. Most modern MiLB parks are in downtown areas. MLB moved teams around based on facilities. Even Round Rock (who had a relatively new stadium) had to add and renovate facilities to appease Manfred.

Some of those things could easily be added to Zephyr, but it’s probably best to build new, and in a different location.
