Yeah it was the previous year that the Astros hated Giles

The asking price from the Yankees was for the guy who was 4th in the league in Cy Young voting.

The asking price from the Astros was for the guy who had a 4.30 ERA.

Pirates are weird.

Yup... I am sure the Yankees could have given up something similar to what the Astros did

So why not include McHugh if you want to cherry pick? I mean he had a 0.00 ERA in 4 innings in the ALCS?????

Because he had zero pressure in those innings? They were put in series season and franchise altering spots. To compare what McCullers and Peacock did in huge situations to McHugh is disingenuous.

Pirates should have taken that.

What they were postseason innings, who cares if the Yankees were winning 8-0 at the time.... he threw 0's...

Yeah I’m really shocked this is what the Pirates ended up trading for after seeing what they wanted from NYY and then also seeing they wanted either Tucker or Whitley from Houston earlier in the week

The guys Pitt got are valuable in the sense that they are all young MLB ready guys but I’m surprised they didn’t try to get some of our higher rated prospects as well

Gregorson had a 3.28 ERA the year before. I preferred Reed, Nicasio, or Davis. But it’s not like Gregorson has has sucked several years in a row. It’s funny watching Astros fans suddenly defend Giles when they wanted nothing to do with him 3 months ago.

The replies to the Pirates Twitter announcement of this trade are fantastic

How are those prospects that the Astros have up? From reaction seems like the Astros did good

Musgrove didnt succeed in the rotation this year but was very good in the pen. Very hard worker and expect him to be a decent major leaguer but future may be in the pen (certainly would have been for us)

Moran has been a very hard luck guy. Had a big injury in the minors, was a top prospect last season but didnt stick in his cup of coffee. This year completely redid his swing had a very good year at AAA and was called up when Correa got hurt (hes a 3b, bregman moved over to SS) looked every bit the part but had a ball come of the knob of his bat into his eye and broke a bone in like his 3rd game. Really tough break. Long term for us was gonna have to learn LF or DH but neither were likely for significant time this year.

Feliz has the tools but never was consistent. Looked dominant in the pen then the next day would blow the lead. Got sent down during season to get his mind right and get straight and didnt get called back.

Dont know much about martin.

I get your argument but the fact Lance had that epic multi inning save in game 7 of ALCS and then peacock basically did same thing in game 3 of World Series makes them both very vital to the Stros postseason success last year imo

ETA: I’ll let it go though cause I’m sure people hate when the mlb offseason thread is nothing but Stros talk

Pirates fans: So glad we're no longer the ones justifying how Gerrit Cole is better than his numbers.

Lots of speculation the PIrates think Cole is "done". Not sure what "done" entails, the guy averaged 96 on his FB last season. Think the biggest thing for Houston is the almost guaranteed 200 IP he will give you. The rest is lagniappe

I assumed the Pirates would get at least a top 3 prospect for Cole

Moran was #5
Martin #15
Feliz and Musgrove have a 5.13 and 4.52 ERA respectively but none of the players are older than 25

The astros win the WS with michael feliz throwing McHughs innings.

Without McCullers the astros dont make the WS, without Peacock they are still a trivia question included in teams who havent won one. Luhnow I believe has been on record that the ownership is loosening up the check book after the windfall of winning the WS.

Curious if Minute Maid Park will produce more home runs from Cole

Warning signs for Gerrit Cole to the #Astros:
- Career-high 33.7% fly ball rate
- Career-high 15.9% HR/FB rate. His previous high was 9.4% in 2014
- Minute Maid Park ranked 14th in #MLB park factors for home runs while PNC Park ranked 23rd

You didn’t know Giles’ regular season stats let alone how to spell Gregerson. Sit down.

One could argue without the McHugh innings the Astros may not make it... He came in and pitched 4 critical innings, that if they had given to another reliever he may not have put up 0's. Then another reliever would have had to come in, etc.....

You would have been better off just saying all pitched effective innings, again my argument isn't that they didn't have success. Just the word dominant, which is nitpicking.

Something I saw the other day (if I recall correctly) was that Cole threw a high percentage of fastballs. The Astros as a staff threw the 2nd fewest fastballs.

I'm wondering if Strom puts a greater emphasis on Cole's off speed.
