Flaherty pitched well in half a season in Memphis. I could see an older stopgap starter signed, but not someone who will get a 4-5 year deal like Arrieta. Maybe bring Lackey back on a 1 year deal?

They need a top of rotation guy to go with Martinez.

Not saying arrieta is that person, but i've been told they have interest.

Next year you have

Martinez
Weaver
Wacha(???)
Waino(???)

And 2 of the 4 are who knows. And you dont know what the kid will give you, and no way he can go more than 120 innings off of surgery.

So they could use a couple of starters.

Yeah, I’m not sure what Brantley has left in the tank. He looked so overmatched in his postseason ABs. Granted, still not 100% healthy, but we have to count on him if we lose two big bats.

Everyone and their grandma says we are signing Holland to be the closer. Mixed feelings on it, he fell off hard last year after that phenomenal first half but I like it overall.

I hope the Moustakas to STL prediction comes true as well.

I think Reyes will eventually be that guy, but he probably starts in Memphis for awhile. Hudson will also likely get a callup if not traded. I’d rather keep Lynn than Arrieta. Wainwright was so bad last year he may not last long either.

Did Holland have some injury he was pitching with last year? I hope Nicasio is brought back.

He came back from TJ last year. Nicasio for 8th and Holland closing would be very solid.

Cardinals don't pay closers big $$, so i doubt they pay him closer cash.

Would like to see them make a deal with Rays for Archer/Colome.

When it is just one source or two sure, but when literally every single person around Holland and the Cards including Mo himself say they are signing him...hard to ignore regardless of the past. Surprised you don't know this actually, came out like a week ago he was our #1 offseason target.

We gave a RP $30.5m last year and he wasn't a closer.

The predicted deal for Holland is 4 years 50m to STL from MLBTradeRumors, and 3 years 39m to STL from NYDailyNews.

NYDailyNews also has Moustakas to STL on a 5 year 90m deal, but they are the only one that his him to STL, whereas everyone has Holland to STL, and a few have Wade Davis if not Holland. Either way, we're paying for a closer this offseason.

quote:

The Cardinals are expected to pursue right-hander Greg Holland in free agency once he formally declines his player option, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets. It’s hardly a surprise to see the two sides linked, as the bullpen is known to be a focal point for the Cardinals and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak this offseason. Nightengale notes that the Cards “plan to pounce” on Holland once he’s actually a free agent, though certainly the intensity of their pursuit will be tied to the asking price of Holland and agent Scott Boras.

About to say aren't they paying Trevor Rosenhal 6+ million which is closer money. May not be top closer money like Jensen, Kimbrel, or Chapman but still

Holland got out of his deal, that would of paid him 15mil?? So he isn't signing for under 13-14mil, when he could of had 15 mil this season+ what ever rockies offered, they wanted him back.

Cardinals don't pay big $$$ for closers. And i would be shocked if they give Holland 13-14 mil per.

We will see, they have an extra income of 100mil per season now, with new tv deal. So there is $$$

Gallo, Profar, Andrus, and Ordor is a decent young core assuming they continue to improve... Deshields, Mazara, and Rua and still young as well

Mazara is 22-years-old and Elvis and Rua are 28 and 27

Elvis is in his prime unfortunately and is entering the last year his contract, assuming he doesn't take the player option.

The young core is Mazara (22), Calhoun (22), Guzman (22, likely 1b at some point next year), Odor (23), Gallo (23), LeClerc (23), DeShields (24), Profar (24) and Kela (24).

I don't expect Darvish to come back to Texas. I think Texas will try and get Cashner to sign a somewhat big deal. He was fantastic this last season. Aside from that though, the rotation is a huge question mark.

Right now it's Hamels, Perez, Nick Martinez and two empty spots. So if you don't sign three somewhat quality guys, Nick fricking Martinez is in the starting rotation.

Is Grandal in LA worth an attempted reclamation project? Worst case he is a serviceable DH. Best case he can learn how to play defense and be a somewhat decent catcher.

I don't think he's bad defensively. He would start for most teams and I'm sure LA is willing to trade himbecause Barnes is good. Definitely worth it for a team that needs a catcher, Grandal is good

I thought Grandal was one of the best framers in the league?

That is supposedly a target(Lynn). I’d like the Rangers or whoever for that matter, to sign Minor and see if he can start again. Nothing to lose in doing so. He was very impressive last season. The velocity is up, control is there, and he still has a starter’s repertoire. I think he can be one of the best offseason bargains.

As far as Cashner/Rangers, I’m looking to move on. I’m not interested in signing Cashner to a multi year contract. We already have a hard throwing starter who can’t strike anyone out... I don’t want two in the starting rotation again. I’d prefer to take a chance of Cobb with that money.

Nbers show that grandal and Sanchez were two worst defensive catchers in baseball this season
