It's going to take ownership wanting to impose an international draft but I just don't see them caring enough

I think there will be a fight over deferred money and potential constraints around it

Next owners meeting you are going to see some pushback from owners. However, one issue is L.A. is a desirable spot for players so they are willing to take the deferred money over the upfront money.

The taxes in California are insane, which means that the players who sign with the Dodgers have an added tax burden. I'm assuming there is some tax benefit to the players accepting deferred money

You also typically see higher signing bonuses as a way around that as well

Since they only pay California income taxes for half their games, I wonder if players can request contracts that pay most of their salary for road games.

Sounds like this is because Kopech is expected to miss time early on

There is no way they don't win
INF- Smith, Freeman, Betts, Rojas, Muncy
OF- Conforto, Hernandez, Edman
DH- Ohatani
Bench- Kim, Taylor, Barnes, Outman

SP: Glasnow, Sasaki, Yamamoto, Snell, Miller
RP: Banda, Yates, Scott, Kopech, Graterol, Phillips, Treinen, Brasier

Doesn't even account for Pages, Kershaw, May, Gonsolin, Grove, Knack, Ryan, Stone, Sheehan, Outman, or Rushing and I'm sure that I am forgetting someone.

The only area that could be a concern could be IF depth with Muncy, Betts, Freeman, and Rojas all over 30 with Mookie being the youngest at 32. Yet they have the pitching depth to acquire anyone they would want it seems.

Of course there is they lost to the D-Backs just two years ago with a much better roster.

Now they'll win their division I would think almost certainly.

that roster wasn't better than this one. Unless you are talking the 2022 team that lost to San Diego. That team was legit with Smith, Trea Turner, Muncy, Freeman, Lux, Justin Turner in the INF and Betts, Bellinger, Thompson/Taylor OF. Pitching they had Kershaw, Urias, Tyler Anderson, Buehler, Heanet, Gonsolin in the rotation.

I'd still give this team the advantage though

I agree but it's all relative, they have a better roster but they can still be beaten in a playoff series. There roster relative to others in 2022 was better and they did not win then.

Glasnow will almost certainly be hurt for a significant portion of the season, maybe even the post-season, there are concerns about Sasaki's drop in velocity at such a young age and not everyone is in on him being a star right away, some of their position stars are starting to get older (Freeman is 35 and Betts 32) - Over 162 that talent will likely win the division but let's see what happens in oct.

If the Dodgers try to use that as an excuse in CBA negotiations, the league should just let teams pay players the difference in taxes and that not count against the cap. So say the league average state tax % was X%, and California was 5% over X. The Dodgers could pay that 5%.

Teams with low or no state taxes would still have an advantage in free agency, but it would help the others out a bit.

The next CBA process is going to be a contentious mess. Something is going to have to change with how teams operate. The chasm right now between the haves and have nots is probably at its worst point with the present and future of RSN TV deals.

The Dodgers are expected to bring in more than $330M off their TV deal. Now some of that goes into a community pot for revenue sharing but they're not hurting. Meanwhile a team like the Rangers had their RSN deal fall apart. They don't currently even have deals to carry games on cable/satellite. It's DTC streaming subs only. Estimates are they'll only bring in 60M in TV revenue. Those finances aren't remotely equal. And I wouldn't even consider the Rangers a have not. They certainly are better off than Tampa, Miami, the A's.

There's just such uncertainties and changing revenues in these RSN deals. You're not getting these billion dollar carriage deals anymore. Those revenues are declining for some, not so much for others. It's gonna have to come to a salary cap/floor arrangement.

It sounds like Alonso is a goner.

quote:

The New York Mets held their first winter event for fans in five years at Citi Field on Saturday, and there was one notable absence. Pete Alonso wasn't in attendance because, for the first time since the 2016 draft, he isn't a member of the Mets' organization.

"Personally, this has been an exhausting conversation and negotiation," Cohen explained. "I mean, [Juan Soto's negotiation] was tough. This is worse. A lot of it is, we've made a significant offer. I don't like the structures that are being presented back to us. I think it's highly asymmetric against us and I feel strongly about it."

Owners are already beginning to posture. Interesting comment from Levine.

I love how they are going to frame this as a competitive balance thing as if they haven't wanted a cap to suppress player salaries for decades
