And what makes you think he's not going to be? He's 21 years old. Just because he would start his career at the back end of a rotation, doesn't mean he'll stay there. Smart teams break in their young pitchers slowly. Earth shattering concept I know.

Darvish’s contract is really good too considering what most ACE who hit free agency are making. Cubs bought relatively low.

One need is definitely starting pitching. Not taking into account the return from the Padres, that would leave us with Hendricks, Mills, and Alzolay. That's it. And if were truly shedding payroll, I can only imagine what kind of FA starters we'd go after
