I’m hoping this move opens the door to lift the blackout restrictions, because I would absolutely subscribe to MLB.tv. I honestly don’t see why they have the blackout as it keeps the branding from spreading and increasing revenue.
The blackout issue isn't tied to the national TV contract and it's not tied to local attendance. It's tied to the local TV deals. The teams have wanedt you to subscribe to their regional TV network or pressure your cable or internet provider to carry it, if they don't already. As regional TV deals are going belly up, those are the teams that are now opening up streaming-only packages.

The viewing #s for World Series in the current 2 year span is the 3rd worst behind the 2 years before that and the 2 years before that since 1972...
the last 2 year period, more people watched the World Series (12.1 avg) than the NBA finals (11.4 avg)
the previous 2 year period the Word Series (11.7 avg) did better than the NBA finals (11.1 avg)
the 2 year period prior to that, the World Series (11.8 avg) did better than the NBA finals (11.2 avg).

correct, but they got too greedy with it.
every single zip code in America is claimed as “local” by at least one MLB team.
even if you’re in a zip code that is several hours drive and in some other state.
Iowa has no major league team but the entire state is blacked out of SIX major league teams.
Hawai’i is blacked out of more California teams than San Diego is.

This gets a bit complicated for my little brain - but help me out here - the Astros are blacked out by MLB here in Baton Rouge, correct? But......if you subscribe to FUBO as my in-laws who are huge Astro fans do, you can watch all the Astros games here locally on Space City Network or whatever it is.
Is that an option everywhere? In other words, if you are a let's say a Cub fan in Iowa and am therefore blacked out on MLB - can I get Marquee through a streaming service there and watch the Cubs that way, and does that work in other areas of the country as well or is it pretty much a state-by-state or region-by-region case as to whether there are streaming services that can circumvent blackouts?

I’m in L.A. If I subscribe to Spectrum’s streaming TV service it doesn’t even come with SportsnetLA (which shows the Dodgers and Lakers) or any of the local channels. It’s stupid. You have to get traditional coax service which is a complete waste of money. They seriously need to fix this.

This is the most convoluted bullshite I've ever seen.

Between the regional networks fiasco and now espn mlb is not in a good position when they don’t want your product Maybe if the dodgers weren’t deferring every contract and you had some uniformity in the league it might work
Yup. And they sold their soul for Yankees/Dodgers hoping for maximum profit.

They’re going to double down on the WNBA. This may be the reflection point that drives espn into the abyss.

Are there parts of LA where you can’t even get Spectrum even if you wanted to?

not sure about FUBO specifically.
but if you live in the “local area” and your TV/Streaming service offer the channel, you absolutely can watch it.
but that’s what i mean my MLB making it difficult.
you have to go out and find who offers that Network in your local area.
you can’t just subscribe through MLB and get it.

Every team is blacked out on MLB.tv in their regional broadcast territory. The idea is that, in theory anyway, you can watch your local team on pay TV. FUBO or DirecTV Stream who carry Space City Network are no different from cable/satellite in that regard. They're streaming services but they're pay TV providers who opted to add Space City to their lineup, no different from Comcast. So you're not circumventing blackout rules there because you're getting the channel through a pay TV service.

Heading into 2025, 22 out of 30 MLB teams are offering stand alone in market streaming packages. Meaning you pay a certain amount a month specifically for a subscription to watch those games. The Cubs Marquee Network is available for $20 a month.

So which ones are the eight that aren’t? Other than the Dodgers?

Manfred is a joke and he let his sport get to this point. ESPN sucks but baseball hasn't done anything to help itself lately other than the pitch clock. I thought that was a vast improvement.
Letting guys like Angel Hernandez and Las Diaz continue to be umpires is also on him. I know they are union but these and others hurt the game.
If it wasn't for Disney's money, ESPN would be an after thought in 10 years. Whoever said it has turned in the NBA daytime drama network hit the nail on the head.

So Stephen A and LeBron didn't want baseball anymore.
Posted on 2/24/25 at 11:03 am to Lsuhoohoo
MLB went regional some time ago and most of us who follow OUR team want to follow OUR team exclusively. I get ALL Yankee games and that is a lot of baseball to follow. ESPN and Fox are not even a consideration for me unless the Yankees are on it.
