The Mississippi Braves have announced that the 2024 season will be their last in Pearl at Trustmark Park.

The team announced their intentions on social media Tuesday. That came after Shea Gunn, executive vice president Diamond Baseball Holdings, which owns the team, agreed to terms with the City of Columbus, Georgia, during their city council meeting Tuesday.

Attendance at Trustmark Park in Pearl for Braves games has been disappointing at best. Of 30 total Double-A teams, the Braves were 29th in attendance in 2023 with 2,545 fans per game, according to Ball Park Digest. Only the Biloxi Shuckers, the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, had fewer fans per game in 2023 with 2,440 fans per game.
F**k. There goes my Thursday night entertainment.

Is it me or are minor league teams moving closer to their major league affiliates?

30 years too late for me. Would have been awesome as a 7-8 yr old kid going down to Golden Park to see the teams that had Chipper, Javy, Klesko, etc.
Instead, I had the fricking Red Stixx to follow lol

Braves are making that push (the Stripers being in Gwinnett has been very convenient for AAA callups, they only have to go right down I-85 to Atlanta).

It certainly appears that way. Of course the M-Braves being next to last in attendance last year did not help.

Just hope they stay in the southern league so I can go catch them in biloxi

Yep, empty games don't help the cause. We enjoyed the games, really cheap and good entertainment. I could take the family for like $25 bucks and most games had a huge firework show afterwards. It stinks, I wonder what they will do with the park?

In the announcement yesterday the team said they would do everything they could to help attract another team to the area.
But...with teams trying to localize their minor league system, I don't know if you will find a team willing to move there.
I'm also wondering what this portends for teams like the Charleston Riverdogs (Rays), Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), and Nashville Sounds (Brewers).

Makes it a lot easier to send guys out on rehab assignments, recall them on the day of a game, etc... if they're in driving distance to and from Atlanta. The Braves now have four minor league affiliates in Georgia and Augusta is the farthest away.

I thought all of the minor league Braves team had to change their names because of copyright deals?

They used to be the Macon Braves. I wonder why they didn't move them back there. I guess Columbus was more attractive.
Not sure I like the trend of bringing minor leagues close to home. There are a lot of Braves fans near Richmond VA, for example, due to them hosting a AAA team there. Outreach like that is going to fade away.

This about the stadium standards for minor league teams now, not localizing anything.
If the braves owned them, I could see the localizing, but diamond sports owns them, and most other minor league teams. And they are just moving them to a park that already meets the standards so they don’t have to improve one that doesn’t draw anyway.

I wonder how the Biloxi Shuckers are doing?
The Beau Rivage being across the street from the park probably helps a lot.
Trustmark Park wasn’t that bad. They have that outlet mall and bass pro shops and some hotels nearby but I guess that wasn’t enough to keep them in Pearl.

Golden Park doesn't currently meet the standard by any measure right now. Columbus city council approved $50m for renovations. But I agree that if their current stadium needed updates, why invest if it's not drawing attendance.

ETA: SO damn glad to have minor league ball back in Columbus, it's been gone too long

no, the Macon Braves were Single A and moved to Rome. The Mississippi Braves were in Greenville before moving to Pearl.

Independent teams will likely move into some of these markets

One of the great names and logos.

They were dead last in attendance in AA last year.

Hoped NO would get a Southern League team. Seemed reasonable for them to play in Pearl, Biloxi, Montgomery, and Pensacola

That’s the reasoning behind the Shreveport, Rangers proposed deal. Hoping it comes to fruition. Not holding my breath, though.
