It seems counterintuitive but at that point you have to let the opponent score. IF you play it out they use up all the time, kick a FG, and it's over b/ you have no time to do anything. If you let them score you can try to go down the field for a TD and then can attempt an onside kick.
That scenario is pretty much how Indiana beat Penn State last year.
