Michael Wilbon’s Comment On LeBron James, Kevin Durant Is Going Viral

Would players like LeBron and Durant have been dominant in the 1980s or ’90s? Wilbon does not think they would have been.

“There’s no one now who would have dominated the ’80s and the ’90s,” Wilbon said. “They’re not dominating anybody back then – athleticism or evolution or not.”

Take ESPN's Michael Wilbon, who told colleague Zach Lowe on "The Lowe Post" podcast that anyone who thinks the dynastic Warriors of the mid-to-late 2010s would "kill" the second Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls squad to threepeat should "shut the eff up."

"The first thing when I tell people to shut up is, 'Just stop,' " Wilbon told Lowe. "Nobody's gonna kill Michael Jordan's team ever. Now, you've got Jordan, (Dennis) Rodman, (Scottie) Pippen, (Ron) Harper. What, they couldn't guard every position? ... The Bulls didn't switch because they didn't have to. It wasn't played that way then. You got on your man, and you stayed (on) his butt. When you have those four guys out there, I'm sorry, who's gonna guard them? Who's gonna guard Michael and Scottie?"

It’s an unfair comparison because he’s not “replacing” MJ with LeBron or Durant. He’s acting like they’re just added to the league in addition.

Well, in that case, MJ wouldn’t have dominated the 90s as much as he did if he had to go through LeBron or Durant, either.

He should have used better examples like Steph Curry and James Harden whose offensive impact is heavily bolstered by volume three point shooting. LeBron and Durant are legendary talents and would be phenomenal in any era.

Physically they would be ok. They lack the mental toughness

No doubt he's right. NBA used to be really physical then David Stern ruined it.

Agreed, Wilbon's a mixed bag when it comes to takes and invoking LeBron and KD is a pretty dumb take, I have my constant doubts about LeBron's mental toughness but KD's an underrated mentally tough player who generally always dominates in the clutch. I basically believe LeBron would submit Magic numbers circa 1987 maybe a bit more in scoring.

The second Bulls triumvirate has three of the best defenders of all time. Certainly three of the best 10 all time. I just don’t see anyone today winning 4/7 against that defense.

They played defense then. Today’s basketball is absolute crap pick up game ball. High scoring, little effort on defense. See how physical the game was in the 80’s and 90’s? Players now cry if they initiate the contact. The old game was a big boys, hard fouling game. Look at Rodman and Malone. Those boys were going at it on the ground and when they got up they smacked each other on the arse and moved on. The crying that would come today from that kind of play.

I love that people think one of the most physically gifted athletes ever couldn't do well in an era with terrible defense because he might get fouled hard once or twice a game.

Warriors wouldn’t have to worry about getting bodied in the paint since they’d be draining 3s.

I’m not saying MJ wouldn’t win multiple championships, but, he wouldn’t have gone 6 for 6 against the 2015-19 Warriors.

Whoever was guarding Steph would tire out so fast.

Healthy Steph can run off 3 screens in one play and hit a 35 footer in your face with ease lol. No one was doing anything remotely close to that in the 80s and 90s. Saying he would tire out because someone could hand check him is so lazy, and I hate Steph.

I’ve never been a fan of Lebron but I’m not going to pretend he wouldn’t have shitted all over the competition regardless of which era he had played in.

Would love to see LBJ or Durant drive the lane with Rodman, Barkley, Lambier, Oakley, etc. waiting for them.

Not really... teams averaged mire points back in the 80s ... people think this because of the hard fouls that are highlighted

Wilbon is a long time coke and drinking buddy of MJ and Barkley.
