What's the normal age range that swimmers compete as pros, and how old is Phelps?

Out of the other current athletes, Federer and Bolt probably do come closest to dominance. However, Federer lost last year to Nadal on grass at Wimbledon which was a blow to his dominance on that surface and overall as he was seen as virtually unbeatable on grass. The only reason Federer has returned to dominating this year is because Nadal has been injured for the first time. While Federer is probably the best overall player ever, there will always be an asterik by his name because of Nadal. Phelps doesn't have that asterik in my opinion. He has risen to the occasion at almost every instance. I guess the closest that I think anyone comes to Phelps is Michael Jordan. Although he played a team sport, his talent was just head and shoulders above everyone else and there was no doubt in your mind that he was the greatest ever to play and most likely will be for a long time to come. I think the same can be said for Phelps. Not only did he come back to beat the trash talking Cavic, he did it with the other guy wearing a suit that probably shaved at least a second, maybe two off of his best time while Phelps wore the regular suit. If they raced like Cavic said he wanted to "in their underwear," Phelps would have beaten him by a lot more. And for Phelps to do what he did at the world's having only trained for a few months is just ridiculous!

Phelps is 24. He will be 27 at in London in 2012. He got lucky for 2008 when the olympics lined up perfectly for a peak swimming age. You are seeing older and older people compete in swimming but they have to dwindle down the number of events they compete in. He could compete in 2 maybe 3 more Olympics if he really wanted too. Who knows. There is just no way he will have the stamina to go for 8 golds at the next Olympics, especially with the staggering number of qualifying races. He could easily finish his career with 20+ gold medals.

IMO that is dumb. He has completely dominated everything except clay. If it were not for Nadal he would have like 3 French Opens. Just because one of the best clay court guys is playing at the same time it doesn't take away from the fact he is probably the best all around player ever.

+1, although i don't think anyone will ever do what Phelps has accomplished.
Didn't he say he was going to go after 10 medals in 2012?

Do the olympic games limit events? I wasn't aware of that.

I can't find any rule saying this, but thats all people talked about was 8 medals so i figured it was the most events you can swim. Maybe its just not logistically possible to do more than 8.

Tiger is the answer. In 20 years from now all time greatest athlete lists will not have phelps in the top 5. Tiger will be number 1.

Tiger wins about 25% of the time. Phelps wins probably 90% of the time.

Fedor wins 100% of the time.

Edwin Moses won 122 consecutive 400 meter hurdles races (107 finals) between September 1977 and June 1987.

Tiger should focus on making cuts before we call him the most dominant athlete ever.

there's no rule stating that no one can swim more the 8 events in a single olympics

it's just not realistic for someone to swim more
