franchises couldn't do, and some teams who just shelled out a bunch of bad money coudnt do.

Dolphins haven't won a playoff game in 25+ years. They've only made it 5 times and they've only been within 10 pts in one of those games. They are a bottom 3 franchise in the 2000s.

Dead cap isn’t necessarily the worst thing when you’re a tanking team. Basically is just like catching up on your credit card bills after Yoloing a bit too hard in previous years. They can fully wash themselves of their bad contracts by 2028 at the latest without any funny cap work.
The issue is more when you compound that credit card bill by paying it down, then running it up again when a cool boat shows up on Facebook market place and the cycle churns where you never get the full weight of your assets again.
That roster needs a lot of work, and free agent spending rarely leads to the improvement you need to build a real contender. Take your lumps, swing in the draft for game changers, and don’t overcommit to middling talents on the roster and in FA, and hope for the best. The rest is pretty much just luck from a roster building perspective

They got caught up in the QB trap.
1) Tank for Tua…
2) Plan to build around Tua…
3) Tua isn’t the savior, but it’s a bust…
3) Extend Tua because not many other options…
4) Tua isn’t good, but you end up with his massive contract and have to rebuild.
Same thing happened with Daniel Jones.

Tua isnt a bust. He is the starting QB for the Falcons.
Miami didnt get fricked by Tua, they got fricked by not protecting him and trying to change their entire offensive philosophy every season.
They were trying to pass the ball with Tyreek and Waddle but had no pass blocking. Then when they finally got pass blockers they draft Achane ans try to run some gimmicky offense.
I think bringing in Tyreek was the real problem. They needed a decent receiver with size and pay for lineman.

It wasn't just Tua they released, they also cut Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb. Then they took additional cap hits by trading Waddle and Fitzpatrick.
I don't think they give a cap about this year, they replaced Micah Fitzpatrick by signing Major Burns.

I’m a Dolphins fan and have been since my childhood, I watch every game. I supported Tua vehemently until last season.
He was absolutely unwatchable. Totally lost in the pocket, if the first read was covered it would end in a sack or INT. The o-line was actually somewhat decent last year and pass pro was not as bad as you’re making it out to be.
They had to eat the shite sammich that was his cap hit and get him off the team. He was no longer an option because of how piss poor he played.
They’re finally doing a rebuild the right way, and after his dead cap number is off the books they’re in fantastic shape going forward.

Only so much benefit to having deep threats when the qb wants to get the ball away as fast as possible so his eggs won't get scrambled again.

One of these days, teams are going to learn, it is better to eat your vegetables now than the same rotten veggies years later.

They had to tear the band aid and heal the cap…they will have 3rd highest salary money going into next season tho. They will be fine

Close to 60% of the cap in dead money is impressive, but I am pretty sure this was a strategic 1-time situation where they were basically announcing that we are going full rebuild and dumping bad contracts to move forward.
Let's do a 2013-2026 average and see where they rank. The fact that the Saints hold the 5th & 9th spot in the top-10, over back-to-back years, needs to be pointed out.
SF being 10th with 37.2% of their 2025 cap in dead money and still going 12-5 is impressive, and shows why a single big dead money year is not always a bad thing.

The worst thing to happen to the Dolphins, in a long time - which lead to this dismantling, is how the roster was managed after the 70-20 beatdown of Denver 3 years ago.
Crazy how the team that scored 70 has arguably the worst roster in the NFL now, while Denver has arguably one of the best.
