Not trying to be nostalgia bro here but jesus, Hundley, Cockweiler, Savage, whoever the F is on the niners, Cassell... The list goes on.

These dudes have no business whatsoever getting a paycheck. What did Hundley have last week? 87 f-ing yards?

Cockweiler's QBR was 29 this week.

Savage threw his first TD in like 15 starts or something.

God knows who the Browns have.

Feel like there used to be guys like Collins, Vinny T, Grossman (realize he went to a SB as a starter) and Gannon at certain points in his career.

Can these teams/colleges really not field better players, just don't remember it being this bad.

tbh, the starting QB play has been bad the last 5 years or so outside of the top guys.

couldnt even name a good amount of the backups

Can you name a time when it was good? The few instances I can think of the backup either kept the starting job or was traded to be a starter elsewhere.

What pisses me off is teams will continually play shitty veterans as backups rather than give a young guy a shot. Like the Titans refusing to give Alex Tanney a chance when he looks pretty damn good each preseason.

There’s only about 20 people in the whole world that are good at QB. The rest are a crapshoot.

Practice time has been drastically reduced and most college teams aren't running the types of offense used in the NFL.

This is why backups look like trash.

I think this is the main reason. There are very few Mariotas and Watsons out there that can run a spread in college and also be effective at throwing from the pocket in the NFL.

This issue may have even worked its way down to the high school level where potential pocket passers that are not great athletes don't even play QB in HS anymore and end up being baseball players.

Early 90s Jeff hosteler and Frank Reich come to mind. Hell Frank Reich may be the best pure backup qb ever( don't consider Steve young a backup).

Backups have always been the same. Before the rule changes, most offenses were built around running backs, so the backup qbs' passing abilities weren't depended on as much as they are now.

Jake Delhomme for the win

And all of the various Billy Joes amongst the years for the Saints

And Jeff Hostetler won a SB as a backup for Phil Simms

The backups never get to play, even in garbage time, unless the starter is hurt. Take over, kid.

It seems you would see a backup come in and take a few snaps back in the day. But no lead is safe these days, so you see Drew Brees out there even if it’s just take a knee time.

The NFLs problem is bad qb play. That’s the main reason people lost interest. The rest just piled on top of that

I've seen a lot of different reasons posted why the NFL is slumping.

one of the go-to lines use to be that the rules were slanted towards the offense and its impossible to play defense anymore. Not saying that teams are world beaters this year on defense but I think we get caught up talking about so much other crap about the NFL that better defensive play is overlooked.

course, lot of that is because of bad QB play

even still though, I think defenses are underrated just because of the narrative that's been beaten into our heads the last few years.
