The team, though, is his responsibility. If they aren't motivated, that's his problem.

is an idiot for saying that

However, I agree. Multiple players on the team get paid more than him. They shouldn't need a lesser paid employee to do their motivating

This.

Time for him to move on.

It's his job to get his players to buy into his philosophy.. to motivate them to give that extra little effort that championship quality teams show when winning.. it's his job to motivate them to study the book and put in the film time since practice time is limited... it may not be the rah rah motivation but the important stuff that players at that level need to accomplish a championship

is he "technically" right? yes

is it about the stupidest thing in the world to say openly? hell yes

it is his job to get his team prepared for and ready to play, that also includes having them mentally focused on winning.

so in a round about way, he "is" responsible for making sure they are motivated or he isnt doing his job

but the players do ultimately have the final control over whether they give a frick or not and are just going through the motions to cash a check.

with a coach saying things like this it is very easy for players to read that and say good, if he doesnt care if i am motivated, then why should i care whether or not i am motivated to win

Well it's not. They are paid professionals

Most people that earn a living wage are paid 'professionals'. And pretty much every damn one of them needs to be motivated by their direct superior. Its just a fact of life

And if Marvin doesn't see it that way, then you know why his teams have never risen to the challenge of winning a playoff game. Because like unmotivated staff on a job, they all still get paid despite their quality of work.

He’s right. College rah rah crap is over.
NFL players may act like children but they are supposed to be grown men.

Vince Lombardi frowns upon Marvin Lewis

Back then players had off season jobs to make ends meet.

It was probably dumb for him to say but true.

It is a job. In a regular job nobody wants someone you have to motivate. That should only apply to people not making any money. If you are getting paid enough motivating yourself is part of what you are getting paid for. I have never had to have anybody motivate me.

As a person who lives here in the "jungle" I can tell you couple of things.

1. and i have been saying this for years, he is the NFLs affirmative action head coach, keep in mind he was a black head coach when that wasn't so common 15 years ago, I believe the NFL and Mike Brown made a deal that Marvin would be the man regardless of his record, Mike gets his $$$ Marvin keeps his job, the NFL looks less racist....tell me where I am wrong, the only losers are Ohio fans, but Ohio football fans are losers so it is fitting.

2. Speaking of loser Bengals fans, it never ceases to amazae that none of them are upset with Marvin, you will never hear a fan saying he should go, but when Urban Legend lost the OU game this year Suckeye fans were saying it was time for him to go.

3. Why does football suck so bad in my state, Bengals Buckeyes, Browns, that is your killer B's.
