It's a good analogy in my opinion.
It's a BS analogy. Did Goodell actually say that Payton "should have known"? Where is the link or are we taking Schlereth's word as though it is coming from the burning bush? Payton DID know. It was his idea to implement the plan to make his defense "nasty" and then he orchestrated the plan to cover it up.

Yeah...the 220 lb NFL player had to defend himself against his fiance by knocking her out like she was in a ring with him. As oppose to restraining her like most men do when their wife swings on them and calming her down. you know because you love and care about one another...and all that jazz.
I'm not trying to defend Rice...but she did swing first. I'm guessing he regrets how he defended himself but technically, that is what he was doing.

Rice had to drag her limp body off the elevator. I can easily understand Schlereth being a husband and family man being upset and disturbed by that footage.

It's AMAZING that a handful of anonymous people on an LSU message board know what the Saints and Sean Payton did or did not do when the only "evidence" America has seen is a couple of PowerPoints, a legal hit on Kurt Warner, and a vile yet ultimately irrelevant locker room speech by Gregg Williams.

I just rewatched it and recant my previous statement...
she taps him aggressively on his chin on her way into the elevator.(definitely pissed him off)
they exchange words(probably alot of profanity)
Ray leans in and I assume he spits on her face...you can tell by how she reacts(shocked face) immediately and puts her elbow into his mouth.
He responds with a jab, backs up and anticipates her charge and follows that with his left handed KO
ETA: if you watch it fullscreen(play and pause) like its a nip slip on a VHS tape you should catch everything

He gathered team powerpoints and cocktail napkins to indict the Saints.
The powerpoint evidence against the saints literally looked like a 3rd grader did it.

While I agree that Goodell screwed the pooch on this, and should lose his job for it, Saints fans using this as vindication for Payton's ego and frick you attitude to the league is laughable. Pill popper is just as much an insufferable egomaniac as the dude y'all are projecting against. Both idiots got too big for their britches and needed to be brought back down to earth.
Payton had his comeuppance.... now it's Roger's turn.

nothing wrong with that

I kind of agree
This whole ordeal is completely out of the ordinary for Goodell. He's always gone further than most people expect or want when investigating issues like this. No one knows for sure, but I have no reason to think Goodell saw the tape and did nothing or just didn't care about finding out. Hell people have always hated on roger for being too harsh and being to much of a "dictator" and abusing his power

violence against women (both sexual and domestic) is brushed over a lot of the time in the country. See the thread about Jerry Jones where half the posters initial attitude is to make a snide remark about the accuser.

Not only that, even before the TMZ video came out, Goodell acknowledged that he "didn't get it right". I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Then again, I'm not a Saints fan.

i'm not a Saints fan either and I don't give him the benefit of the doubt. He's about protecting the shield, not doing the right thing.

Hindsight is 20/20. The commissioner needs to make alot of decisions that are sometimes based on their own merit. Not only does he have to appease the owners, he has to appease players, the NFLPA, the media and the fans. He also has to consider the legal exposure of every decision. In the end, he got it right.

It's so easy
The NFL saw the video thought 2 games sounded about right and shite the bed when we reacted to the video.
And now they're lying to cover their arse
Simple as that

So are you insinuating that in this case, those 2 things are mutually exclusive?

i'm not insinuating it, i'm flat out saying it.
There's no way you can get me to believe he hadn't already seen that video. For whatever reason they were convinced it wouldn't get out and decided that protecting the image of the league was more important than handing down a proper punishment.
