It’s been 20 years since Mark McGwire took baseball fans on a wild ride to chase baseball history. Over the course of the 1998 season he hit 70 home runs, smashing the single-season record that had once been held by Roger Maris. When Maris broke the record in 1961, he topped some guy named Babe Ruth. Maybe you’ve heard of him?

But we don’t talk about McGwire in the same glowing way as Maris and the Babe. And that’s because McGwire admitted to taking performance enhancing drugs during that 1998 season, as well as throughout his career.

He hit 49 without them.

Could not stay on field with A's. Foot/plantar. St Louis was where he hit the juice hard.

Barry bonds was similar. Great before hamstring injury. Going for 30 30 hr and sb or 40 40. Hammy injured. led to juice.

“Unfortunately, there wasn’t any testing,” he said. “There wasn’t anything going on (to keep the sport clean). The game has done a terrific job of doing what they’re doing now. I commend them for doing it. I think we all wish (testing) went on when we had played. But unfortunately, it didn’t.” If there had been testing, he said, there’s “no way” he would have used a single performance-enhancing drug. And it was striking to hear him use those words: “no… way.”

what a crock of shite this statement is... athletes are always looking for an edge over the competition regardless of drug testing and regardless of the era. and PEDs/no PEDs if you hit 70 hrs in a season you're a damn legend

Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa were frauds. Palmeiro too.

None of them were anywhere close to the inflated bogus numbers they produced while juiced.

There’s a good reason they’re not in the Hall of Fame, and never will be.

The attempt to re-hab their image has already started. Hopefully intelligent folks everywhere continue to smack this BS down.

Not at the plate really, but Bonds was one of the best baseball players this planet has ever seen before he hit the juice.

So he's basically saying he took PEDs but they didn't make him hit any more HRs?

Well, a lot of them claim to do it so they can heal faster from injury and a grueling baseball schedule as well. Not sure of the validity of that claim, but if it were true, that would mean he hypothetically would've missed more games and/or been more physically tired, leading to fewer home runs.

Anybody that doesn't admit Bonds greatness prejudice is just blind to reality. I do wonder how many bombs these guys would have hit without juicing. The year Bonds hit 73, it seems like half were into the Cove. Those are home runs with or without steroids. I would be interested in looking and seeing how many of his HRs that year cleared the fence by, say less than 20 ft. Anything over that is probably a hr anyway.

True, but McGwire was on the stuff that just made you bigger and stronger. Not that he wasn't on the stuff that heals too, but his PED of choice seemed to be the stuff that made you more powerful.

mcgwire, canseco, palmero, arod, sosa... all tainted. All cheated and ruined their name. Everything they accomplished before or after is meaningless.

No body gives a shite, just like in FB. It is entertaining. If you really want to be strict Ruth is the one you should be holding up. He lived off of hot dogs, beer and cigars and played half drunk most of the time. Maris and most of the others from that period were popping speed like skittles before games but that never gets brought up.

He was also on Andro, which anyone could get right off the shelf, mostly football guys did, but anyone could. My thought was always he did it for injury recovery and prevention after his injury and divorce

He wasn't just on Andro. That Andro stuff was pure crap and 100% worthless. It did nothing to increase free T and was totally worthless as a performance enhancer, muscle builder, etc.
