Just got finished watching the 30 on 30 on Marcus Dupree. That was one young man who was totally used and abused by the system--the preacher, OU (especially Switzer), included...Such a shame...However, I bet not many people faced with that situation would have risen to be a productive member of society, as Marcus Dupree said, "making an honest wage." Sad to think what could have been...but I felt pride for him pulling himself up as we all do, working and taking care of business.

I am very confident that Les Miles would have gotten him to sign with LSU had they been of the same era. After listening to him talk about Switzer and why he left Oklahoma, I'm positive Les Miles is the kind of coach he wanted to play for.

Dupree was of the same cut as Herschel Walker, Earl Campbell and Bo Jackson. I think the last I saw of Dupree he was playing in the USFL.

That is a sad, sad story. Marcus seemed like such a good guy.

Well done film. I remember him in college, and then Walton and Johnson always laughing about him getting his money and getting the hell out of Oklahoma.

I saw him at practice one time, the New Orleans Breakers used to practice out at Muss Bertolino. Man was in shape at the time and a physical specimen. Our high school 1,000 yard rusher was floored.

I never realized he played in the NFL in the 1990s and was productive. Good for him.

It really isn't that sad. The guy got his career cut short by repeated injuries. This happens all the time.

Yeah, it's not like he died, or even ruined his life. I'd say it's "unfortunate", but definitely not sad.

Think people are referring to his potential. Had greatness in his future but is now an afterthought.

Yeah. I definitely get that. The title says it all, really. "The best that never was."

But it is actually kinda misleading, because Dupree WAS something - he had a helluva freshman year and was a Heisman frontrunner. And I believe he was one of the highest profile signees of the USFL - like ever - along with Herschel Walker.

The sad part of the story is the part about him trusting that shady preacher-USM booster-agent guy with his money.

I really thought Dupree would be awesome some day in the NFL. I thought he was every bit as good as Bo and Herschel.

FWIW, i don't think Switzer "used" him. he admitted during the film he didn't handle the situation well.

the guy who absolutely used Dupree was the advisor/preacher dude from USM. not only did that dude wreck his collegiate career, but he also mismanaged the dude's money.

i heard an interview w/ the filmmaker, and he talked about how marcus did take out an insurance policy to cover him in the event of injury in the USFL; however, the advisor guy made the Breakers pay the premium and made the team the beneficiary -- so they could continue to pay the contract. so when he did get injured, but the league folded, Marcus Dupree became just another unsecured creditor and got basically nothing.

However, i think the fact that he worked himself back in NFL shape and played in the league is awesome.

the preacher guy reminds me of cecil newton, wouldnt be surprised to see cam out of football, and broke in a few years.....just seems familiar to this....... and it is a waste of talent in both cases......

How did OU and Switzer use/abused him. Switzer treated him like all the other players. Didn't give him special treatment. At least that's the way I saw it.

umm... Switzer disagrees

quote:

Dupree ran wild against Arizona State, rushing for more than 200 yards in the first half. But he wore down and sat much of the second. The Sooners lost 32-21. "If you'd have been in shape," Barry Switzer, his irate coach, told him afterward, "you'd have rushed for 400 yards, and we'd have won the game."

Dupree rushed for over 200 yards in the bowl game and Switzer still blamed him for the loss.
