As harsh a statement as this is, there is a lot of truth to it.

Compelling stories keep people in the media spotlight. These tragedies did just that.

I think Te'o is a classy kid and a great player, but he is nowhere near the GOAT.

I'm not buying Teo as a Maxwell/Camp guy, but the top 50 comment is just arrogant and/or exaggerated. FWIW Kearse (I think) and Suggs (I know) were DEs. So you name 12, 5 of which are from bama. Yes, I need to be an a-hole

In no particular order:

1. Jevon Kearse (Bit of a stretch calling him a LB but ok)
2. Teddy Lehman
3. Von Miller
4. Dat Nguyen
5. Zach Thomas
6. John Laurenitis
7. Lavar Arrington
8. E.J. Henderson
9. Aaron Curry
10. Jarvis Jones
11. Courtney Upshaw
12. Derrick Thomas
13. Ray Lewis
14. Jonathan Vilma
15. Derrick Brooks
16. Marvin Jones
17. Paul Puz (can't pronouce his name - Penn State)
18. Luke Keuchly
19. Terrell Suggs
20. Barrett Ruud
21. Derrick Johnson
22. Quentin Coryatt
23. Ed Simonini
24. Johnny Holland
25. Reggie Brown

That's just off of the top of my head.

This won't take long. You're at 25. I'll add

26. Pat Fitzgerald
27. Chris Spielman
28. Tommy Nobis
29. Pat Willis
30. Dick Butkus
31. Lawrence Taylor
32. Mike Singletary
33. Aundray Bruce
34. Dan Morgan

Some more added to this thread:

35. The Boz
36. Tommy Nobis
37. Cornelius Bennett
38. Keith McCants
39. Ted Hendricks (Another one that's debatable about being a LB but whatever)
40. Jack Ham
41. Junior Seau
42. Andre Tippett (Another DE/LB guy)
43. Brian Urlacher
44. Randy Gradisher
45. Chuck Bednarick

I also left-off guys like Sam Huff, Rickey Jackson and Hugh Green as they were primarily DL in college before switching to LBs in the pros.

I don't think I even mentioned Kearse or Suggs, altough I do think Kearse played LB for Florida. I don't remember what Suggs played in college, but I would guess DE based on his NFL career.

I don't think the top 50 comment is really all that far-fetched. He probably falls somewhere around there.

He is really good at tackling guys that reach the second level of the defense past the line of scrimmage. He's a sure tackler and a good defensive leader, but he just isn't the kind of dominating / disruptive force that some of the great college LBs have been. There is a Te'o type player (or multiple) pretty much every year at LB in college.

They're both in that grey area. Call em whatever you want really. Kearse definitely played some LB for Florida, but Suggs was primarily a DE.

The comment isn't ridiculous. He's top 50 at best. He doesn't even scratch top 40.

I call it the "Ingram Phenomenon"

Basically, you put a great-not-elite player on the best team in the nation and have that team be a media darling. Then you get yourself an over-inflated superstar player.

Ingram won the heisman and wasn't the best player on his own team. I still argue he wasn't even the best RB on his team.

Am I picking on Bama? No. It spreads further.

Look at Romo. He is a good QB. However, his early few years were so overinflated by Dallas and the media that the nation thought he was an elite QB who is just underachieving.

An individual award in a team sport will always have flaws. Put Te'o on WVU and you wouldn't even know he existed.

I don't think teo is a top 50 all time(could name 50 better since 2000) but your list sucks. Between the guys who werent true LBs to the ones not better than Teo

All of it is still irrelevant regrading this years awards

At this point, you really started stretching. I know Romo doesn't have the reputation for being clutch, but he typically puts up top-notch numbers.

One example

Do you ever bring anything to a thread or do you just criticize others? I threw together a random list in 30 fricking minutes it wasn't a thesis submittal. Also, I fully acknowledged that some individuals on the list were considered more along the lines of stand-up DEs.

Jarvis Jones
77 Total (47 solo) 22.5 TFL 12.5 Sacks 1 INT 7FF

Didnt even suit up for two games

i was about to make a thread asking if Te'o is overrated. Great player, but not Heisman worthy, not even close. I was gonna reference Jones' numbers too

are 7 picks and being a great leader enough to win the Heisman Trophy??

I brought up this stat line to a ND fan about a former LB player who finished 10th in the Heisman (i.e., got a couple of token regional votes).

88 tackles, 39 tackles for loss (Te'o had 5.5), 27 sacks (Te'o had 1.5), 44 QB hurries, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 blocked kicks.

Yeah and his Grandman dies. As if that is supposed to be a big deal - girlfriend yeah - but people say he was inspirational for playing after his Grandma died. Most people by age 22 half lost a grandparent and he was raised by 2 parents - not a grandparent. I think we look for stories these days.

LINK

Big time player there. Getting blocked 5 yards down field and then being a candy arse instead of throwing his weight at Yeldon to stop him from getting the first. Next play, McCarron throws game winning touchdown.
