The media didn't come up with the story that they met after a football game at Stanford, the media didn't come up with the story that she would visit him in Hawaii. He came up with that, and he used that to fuel a sympathy campaign the entire 2012 season.

The catfisher is a POS for doing what he/she/whatever did but Manti is the one that went to the media and straight up lied about details of their relationship to make it seem sweeter than it actually was, because he knew it wouldn't play as well or would raise questions if he was just up about the exact nature of it from the start. Why else would he just make that stuff up?

He could have easily been up front and truthful by saying something like "I never got to meet my long distance girlfriend because of this disease" and with that it wouldn't have been as big a deal because people would have understood he just got duped like many on the internet have. But that wouldn't have been the media gold mine that it was, now would it? He could have very easily just not brought it up at all and kept it private. That was an option too. But the attention needed to be had.

He was a victim yes, but he wasn't completely innocent in all this either.

Agreed, especially with the last sentence.

Was Te’o a victim? Probably. Is he blameless? Hell no.

There are too many inconsistencies and holes in his story. The Deadspin piece at the time even called out how he never went to the funeral, never went to visit her “in the hospital” when he was in LA, and and never went to visit her when he was in town prior to her “accident.”

In all likelihood, he never even considered her more than an acquaintance and ended up exaggerating the status of their “relationship” and milking it for publicity.

Te’o aside, the other thing that stood out in the Deadspin piece was how bad the media looked, especially ESPN. Gene Wojciechowski has always been a piece of shite, but his reaction to the news of the Te’o story being fake was especially fricked up. His response was basically “I couldn’t verify this girl’s existence so what was I supposed to do, call the family?” Uh, yes, that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do when you’re presented with information that is the foundation of your story but is also of questionable sourcing and reliability.

Been saying this for years. Compared Lsu players to him after the 2012 season awards but no one wanted to hear it. All 3 of these players, played 13 games in 2012. I left out the int stats so it would be so obvious. Player 1 55 solo tackles 75 assisted 130 total 15 for loss 4 sacks 2 forced fumbles 6 pass break ups, 4 qb hurries Player 2 55 solo tackles 58 assisted 113 total 5.5 for loss 1.5 sacks Player 3 52 solo tackles 52 assisted 104 total 7.5 for loss 2 pbu, 2 qbh P1: Kevin Minter P2: Te’o P3: Lamin Barrow

It’s worth noting te’o had 7 INTs but your point is fair. The story and the Norte dame machine pushed him to New York

The lesson here is that you dont call a chick your girlfriend until she sucks your dick... in person.

Felt bad for Te’o but how do you let someone drag you for three years with never having seen them in person or on FaceTime or anything?

This was a media thing that got very much out of control, I suspect. It probably started when they interview Manti and they ask him about girlfriends/ love interests and he probably says that there is this girl at Stanford that I've been having a long distance relationship right now we communicate mostly online.

Notre Dame SID runs with it. Te'o likes the attention it gets him. Thinks the girl is real, etc probably during the second half of his junior year as he was being ginned up by the media machine. As time goes on, ND says they probably have a booster that will fly her out to South Bend regularly for ND games so that she can see her beau. Manti probably puts on some pressure about this, she/ he gets nervous and starts concocting cancer stories and then as it all gets to the point that ND has all the mechanisms in place....boom she dies in a car crash

Of course this all came as a surprise to the real Lennaya who does exist and does look like her picture that that the catfish used

Did the doc expose how this was a REC/Saban tactic to undermine ND before the NCG? We had several sleeper cells working various angles on multiple teams. Crazy how this one played out.

Also, I’m still pissed about the Manziel game that year. First time I’d ever seen the milkmen in person.

The documentary made me feel really bad for Manti.

But more importantly it made me fricking furious at the producers for making that mentally ill POS con artist “sympathetic” and at our society in general for having us treat these deranged individuals like saints.

Tin Foil hat time:

Manti met Ronaiaha when he visted USC. Parents, coaches, church pressured him to go to Notre Dame to "Pray the gay away". The fake profile was created to keep contact going without arousing suspicion. The fake girlfriend died when Manti could see the light at the end of the tunnel in his college career. Go pro, make money, get dick. Notre Dame and Manti used this as a way to improve his draft stock/Heisman chances. Deadspin ruins it all. Ronaiaha gets paid off by Notre Dame, takes the fall. Manti now has a very expensive trophy wife to mask the obvious, and Ronaiaha is a basket case on an backwards island. If the story is too hard to believe...don't believe it.

It’s a great documentary. Lord, I’m so glad there’s no documentary of me like that.

This perfectly illustrates the the difficulty of recruiting.

Anyways just finished the documentary and came to a couple of conclusions. Putting myself in what I interpret was his mind frame at the time I can definitely see him falling for this. I feel bad for him that his life got put on blast like that. Secondly, the savagery of the media back the was astonishing. I was blown away that even 10 years ago by the shite they said. Last frick Ronaiah, deserves no sympathy at all.

I think many here are underestimating how sheltered and naïve he was growing up strongly tied to the Mormon faith and a tight knit family with heavy focus on discipline. He certainly wasn’t as prepared to suspect and deal with a catfishing scheme like that as many on this board would be.

This is so true. It's really difficult for someone outside of the LDS faith to understand I am sure. Manti also seems like an incredibly trusting person so it just amplifies the whole situation.

Man there are a lot of wild factors to this story. The montage of sports and news personalities talking about the story reminded me of something strange about that time period. There were many sects of the media back then were obsessed with the idea of people coming out as gay.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that media people were impatiently waiting for the next star athlete to come out as gay. Between the hoopla of the Michael Sam stuff and the front page exclusive coming-out of Jason Collins from the NBA, journalist had an insatiable appetite to promote the next LGBT icon. That's why you have someone like Katie Couric point blank asking him if he was gay on her show. Nowadays it's a nothingburger if someone comes out as gay like Carl Nassib. Now if your trans then you get a lot of attention for it just like that Naya guy.

I just got around to watch the documentary.

It really made me feel for Manti. Don't get me wrong,he is as naive and gullible as shite. But damn if I wasn't the same way when I was 20 years old. I fell for some stupid shite at that time, but luckily for me my dumb moments weren't broadcast on national television for multiple months for the world to see.

What I did get out of this story is how shitty of a person and how much of an attention whore that Roniah is.
The dude saw that Manti wasn't paying Lennay enough attention anymore. So he faked a story about Lennay getting in a car accident. He faked an entire elaborate scheme of her being in the hospital, and only Manti's voice keeping her alive.
When Roniah saw that Manti was dealing with the loss of his grandmother, he realized that Manti's attention wouldnt be on him anymore, so he faked the death of Lennay.
As months go on, and the death of Lennay is the #1 news story in sports media, Roniah realizes he misses the attention that he was getting from Manti, so he calls Manti with "lol surprise I'm actually alive, here's a picture to prove it"

The dude is a grade A piece of shite. He even got his little sister involved. How shitty of a person do you have to be to involve a child involve in your lying schemes. As Roniah life goes on, he realizes that everyone hates him, so what does he do? He becomes a transgender woman, because in this day and age that's a sure fire way to gain sympathy and attention towards yourself.

I'm still stuck on how Roniah was able to get the actual girl whose photo he was using to take a picture for him. That girl must be just as gullible as Manti.

Also, the team selling Teo's girlfriend figurines as an empty box had me rolling.

I'm a Manti fan though. Love his outlook now and he seems like a good guy.

That's the only part of the story that makes sense. She knew the dude from high school and thought he was a nice guy. So when he reached out and asked to take a pic with a hashtag to show support for his cousin who was supposedly recovering from a car wreck, she went along with. She started figuring out something was weird when he sent more requests and she started ignoring him.
