Yeah this makes a lot of sense for them and I can see the appeal for him. Depending on how their youngsters turn out they could have an extremely talented young core plus he gets to live in San Diego

Or AJ Preller could trade everybody. You never know what his next move will be.

with this machado deal, the padres can be a really fun and formidable opponent in the coming years if their young talent develops, which is not a guarantee.

or preller can just start trading them all. you never really know what his next move is

I think the latter is more important than the former. All these guys like Machado are making generational wealth. At a certain point, unless they're insanely idiotic in managing their money, rich is rich. Obviously I'm not in their shoes, but if I'm going to be insanely rich regardless of where I play, I'm looking at quality of life, how the franchise is to work for and their commitment to winning, and the quality of life in the city I'm playing. I think players that are simply looking for whoever is willing to pay them the most money and nothing else matters are probably 1) not the type of guys I want on my team; and 2) have their priorities in the wrong place. But to each his own.

Harper is about to sign for $301 million now with the Phillies. It’s funny how many teams have passed on these contracts. I don’t think any other teams were gonna give Machado 300 million.

Last 5 years of that contract are going to destroy their ability to win.

Padres need to go all in the next 5 years

I don't either. If the franchises dug their heels in, both Harper and Machado would have eventually signed for less than their asking price. Neither one of them would have had the balls to sit out the entire season.

i was thinking the money may be more upfront. the ten years would be to get his AAV down, but maybe its more like 35 to 40 annually in the first 5 years of the deal?

or maybe its mostly deferred as an opt in incentive

Someone who has a better understanding of baseball contracts explain this to me. Why, in these mega-long term deals, do the players' yearly salaries grow larger with the life of the contract and not the other way around? They're less productive on the back end as the front end and it makes them harder to move later. It seems like even when they are traded, you're still stuck with paying part of their salary. I'm sure there is a logical reason, but I don't see it.
