Since 1992 (30 years), only 3 teams from outside of the Top 11 largest metros in the US & Canada, has won a World Series (Kansas City, Boston* & St Louis*). Without a Salary Cap, is this becoming a bigger and bigger problem for MLB? Does something need to be done to fix this ridiculous inbalance?

1992 - Toronto Blue Jays (#1 Canada)
1993 - Toronto Blue Jays #1
1994 - N/A
1995 - Atlanta Braves #8
1996 - NY Yankees #1
1997 - Miami Marlins #9
1998 - NY Yankees #1
1999 - NY Yankees #1
2000 - NY Yankees #1
2001 - Arizona Diamondback #10
2002 - Los Angeles Angels #2
2003 - Miami Marlins #9
2004 - Boston Red Sox #11
2005 - Chicago White Sox #3
2006 - St Louis Cardinals #21
2007 - Boston Red Sox #11
2008 - Philadelphia Phillies #7
2009 - NY Yankees #1
2010 - San Francisco Giants #4
2011 - St Louis Cardinals #21
2012 - San Francisco Giants #4
2013 - Boston Red Sox #11
2014 - San Francisco Giants #4
2015 - Kansas City Royals #31
2016 - Chicago Cubs #3
2017 - Houston Astros #5
2018 - Boston Red Sox #11
2019 - Washington Nationals #6
2020 - Los Angeles Dodgers #2
2021 - Atlanta Braves #8
2022 - Houston/Philadelphia #5, #7

Lets be real, two of those teams from outside the Top 10 are Boston and St Louis, which are historical "blue bloods" of the sport. So in reality, its only Kansas City that's been able to win the World Series from outside the top 10. How do these small markets compete against this model without a hard salary cap? Yes there will always be flashes in the pan like KC 15', but those are the exceptions. I think in the long run, this will be something that MLB truly has to look at.

But wouldn't teams that are in the running add salary at the deadline?

Wanting MLB to get a salary cap is like wanting universal health care in the U.S. Should it happen? Absolutely. Will it happen? 0% chance.

I remember when we went from World Series contender to getting swept to the becoming the Lastros and Disastros.

I don’t think we’ve ever hit the cap.

Sure, but we need to also force small markets to invest luxury tax money long term in players and not put it in owners pockets.

I don't see a problem there in recent years. Even leagues with a salary cap, the biggest spending teams are the ones that win championships. And I mean, it makes sense. Why would a team that is 15th in spending expect to win it all?

There is a de facto cap right now. The hits a team takes for going over the luxury tax threshold and staying there are pretty stringent.

A bigger problem is franchises like Pittsburgh and their $16 million payroll. That's a freaking joke. That said, Cleveland $22.8 million, Baltimore $14 million, and Tampa $37.5 million, all had payrolls at the bottom of MLB and had strong seasons. But, in general, if there is a max there should be a minimum level too given the revenue sharing.

A lot of those teams on your list used a lot of home grown talent and then went out and paid a few big guys to get them over the edge.

#31 typically doesn't win because #31 is typically tanking anyways.

I think those teams took the Astroball approach by building through the draft and farm leagues with the occasional acquisition. So you end up getting a really young core that doesn't break the bank. But then they all come due around the same time and you have to let a few walk.

Metro area is a bad way to rank teams

Miami is a big metro but nobody goes to Marlins games

Plus the Cardinals are a perennial contender in bottom third.

Those franchises are defecto AAAA. They complain like the OP, but sell their elite players to the highest bidder and not invest in their long-term product. They are always talking about relocation. Not because of fan support, but because they refuse to put out a consistent product. I don't feel sorry for them.

Dude, MLB clubs are printing money. Only the NFL makes more revenue than MLB. If a club isn’t spending money to make their team better, it’s because they don’t want to, not because other teams have more money to spend.

ETA: if anything, they need a spending minimum.

No, what happens is the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers etc etc just buy them from the smaller markets. Everyone knows it...and there has to be a better way for the smaller market teams to be more than just a farm system for the major markets. Period!!

I wouldn't be opposed to that, but MLB needs a hard cap and everybody knows it. I mean, the proof is in the very first post!!
