Both guys lived 6 inches off the plate for years. Would not be getting those strikes in today’s game.

Steph Curry without the 3 point line is still one of the greatest shooters in basketball history.

Glavine much more than Maddux, imo. At the height of his career, Glavine was getting 6” off the outer half consistently.

They had to adjust to different umps with different strike zone tendencies every game.

Terrible analogy isn’t it?

Curry would have to be scoring points for missed baskets for things to start lining up with the comparison.

A regulation baseball measures between 2.86 and 2.94 inches in diameter. So two baseballs placed side by side is approximately 5 3/4 to 5 7/8 inches.

While not entirely wrong, this is too much of an out for both of them. It’s way easier for a pitcher to learn/adjust to a strike zone than it is for a hitter to make quality passes at baseballs 3+ inches off different parts of the plate in their limited plate appearances each game.

Complete fabrication and they’ll never even attempt to prove it. In all of these arguments what happens is that side will try to rewrite history. You can’t have honest discussions with people like that.

It’s not about scoring points for misses. It’s about whether elite skill still plays in a different run environment. Curry would still be an elite shooter without the 3-point line; Maddux and Glavine would still be elite pitchers with a tighter zone.

But shooting ability wouldn’t be as valuable without the 3 point line.

Of course he would, Pistol Pete was a HOF player and a legend without a 3pt line.

Two markers you’ll see from that type of argument and the people who make them

1- they didn’t witness the era or players they’re pretending to be experts on

2- they’ve never played competitive level sports and don’t understand high level athletics at a fundamental level

I'd argue Maddux would be better with it.

I’ve done both. I’ve seen Glavine and Maddox more times live than they’ve been to real baseball games.
