Yes and I believe Redemptorist dying has had a direct correlation to Catholic High, Zachary, and Central becoming the football programs that they are now.

Yes that Acadiana team only lost 1 game on the field that season (to STM) and avenged it in a big way.. that has to be the most attended HS football game in Lafayette parish history. They barricaded the end zones for overflow and there were still people rows deep down there.

I think it was 2012 or 2013 but Leonard Fournette ran for damn near 400 yards at STM in a playoff game. Talk about a rough few years stretch for the Cougars haha

Ouachita was the 89 champs, and went to two other title games.

I thought Thibodaux won the first ever 5A Championship game? Should of been around '91

Unless you meant 4A.

Maybe it’s me but HS football now is way more polarized than it used to be

Back in the old days there was a lot more parity. Now the talent is more concentrated and there are more schools now that never get any.

Until St. Aug went up there and put a whooping on them in the 01' quarter finals. Im not even going to lie, I thought we were going to get our asses kicked. Lol. That 01' team beat Airline, Hahnville, and Evangel on the road until West Monroe came into Gormley.

That was the actually the 2000 season. I’m sure West Monroe is still thankful for the upset. They lost to Evangel in the title game in ‘99, and again in both 2001 and 2002.

Evangel won eight titles over a 10-year span from 1993 to 2002. The only teams to beat them in the playoffs were Cecilia in 1995 and St. Aug in 2000.

Cecilia was really good in 1995, and that was the first season Evangel had made the jump up to 3A.

Haynesville also defeated Evangel in the regular season a few times, but they never met in the playoffs. Evangel finally beat them in 1996, and that started a multi-season winning streak that lasted 3+ seasons, and their streak of four consecutive state titles that was ended by St. Augustine.

Someone submitted a ton of old Rummel games to 14-0 Productions and this was one of them.

Crazy how ordinary TV “boo” looked even at practice at Tulane.

TM was at wsu when they dropped football.

Yes it’s got nothing to do with the split. Even before the split the gaps between haves and have nots was widening. And it’s worse now the number of non competitive games is unreal.

It's the opposite in the Lafayette area. You can find a strong football program sometimes every couple of miles.

Seemed like more intense rivalries in the old days - Baton Rouge High-Istrouma, Covington-Bogalusa, Central-Denham or Redempt, Tara-Broadmoor, many others. Hard-fought (and dirty) games, then the fights at Hoppers or Shakeys afterward.

And Redemptorist’s field was the worst. 50 years later, I still remember the cuts and bruises from the bricks sticking up through the dirt whenever we had to play there. Never lost to them, though.

People in this thread will appreciate this info about a legendary Texas team that played some LHSAA teams.
