I think schools in the AAC have athletic budgets $60 million and higher. Tech's $28 million is hard to overcome.
Hard to tell with Tulane, SMU, Temple, Navy, etc not reporting, but I know ECU is around 43MM and Memphis 45-46MM. Add in conference distribution being 2.5-3x higher AAC vs CUSA and it's a ~10MM gap. The big difference here is both these schools also have student fees, ECU's is over 13MM annually, Memphis fluctuates between 7-8MM annually. This is where La schools miss out vs their peers. UT-Tyler charges $16 per credit hour. That fee alone to make them even with a D2 school gets LTU into the 36MM budget range (on par with ECU) and gets the Cajuns into the black with a slight budget bump.
quote:It looks like it started around 2016 or so, IIRC this would be around the time the "Master Plan" started falling behind with funding due to the Oil Market tanking. It will be interesting to see what 2023 looks like, because 2016 to 2022 it looks like it has only gone up with deficits and general fund transfers.
I think our recently inflated-beyond-means budget was our admin partly trying to keep momentum of Billy's success and inflate our budget for possible conference opportunities

They’re not recruiting the same kids
The hypothetical was if they were P5. In which case yes UH and LSU would be recruiting those kids. Even if they are backup plan guys for LSU and not hot and heavy they would still be attempting to pull from the same recruiting pool.

Grambling isn’t on there only because there are no books to examine.

"Grambling, no books to examine".... You have no idea how close to the truth this comment is in actuality.

Pretty sure it is a paraphrase from a state auditor on trying to examine their books.

So USL is losing $5mm/year?
WTF are we paying for that?

The 2021 numbers are interesting in that ULM and McNeese both got an LSU payday and still has staggering loses.

“Dumb” is claiming that subsidies should be counted as revenue.

Nicholls had a really good AD a few years ago according to some boosters I hunt with. Said it’s become shite since he’s left.

Louisiana Tech can’t even get into the Sun Belt right now.
Yeah….I don’t think Tech was begging to get into the Belt. It was basically AAC or bust. You can talk shat all you want (ULL is good at that), but it wouldn’t make sense adding Tech into the Belt with ULM being 30 min down the road.

Sunbelt should have gobbled up Tech and paid ULM to leave

Lol…. Most of Techs current CUSA conference mates…North Texas, UTSA. Rice, Charlotte, UAB & FAU are all joining AAC next year. The only exception here is RICE, big academics, big city, big endowment, with very small fan base. The rest are basically commuter schools that happen to be in large metro markets. So….how abut that AAC quality?

Tech's admins were calling UL(L) and ULM amins trying to get updates on who the Sun Belt wanted to invite. They were trying to get in.
To be fair, I would've been too seeing SHSU and Jacksonville St. getting invites. Heck, I had even saw that McNeese was talking to CUSA.

University athletics programs are glorified commercials for the schools.
If the program makes money great. If it doesn't consider it part of their advertising spend for the year.

I know people that work in the admin.
It's safe to say ya'll have always looked down at the SBC. But I'm willing to bet most of your fans would take that over your current predicament.

Oh yeah, I got these sauces too Baw.
No doubt, the SBC is a better football conference right now, especially in the East division.
People are acting like Tech turned down the Belt….I don’t think there was even an offer simply because of ULM’s proximity. Maybe a couple decades ago before Tech went to be WAC?
But that didn’t seem to hurt our recruiting class or…..
help ULL’s financial situation.
