If they want to play athletics, why can't they?
bc in Metairie for example, a lot of kids live near places like Ecole Classique or Crescent City, and those aren't realistic options if your kid is any good or has potential
or what if the nearest select school doesn't offer the sport you want? what if the nearest select school is Lutheran?

quote:Everyone acts like Curtis recruits all the stud athletes. That is a joke. Look at Curtis' players and compare them to the public school kids. The Curtis kids for the most part are a bunch of small skinny white kids. They dont dominate due to freak athlete recruits, they win because they buy into the system from an early age. Kids want to go there because they know they will be able to show their full potential
Tons of kids pass up a whole bunch of private schools on their way to Curtis every morning. I always laughed at all the kids in St Charles Parish not wanting to attend Hahnville or Destrehan driving all the way to Rummel or Curtis when St Charles Catholic is far closer. Still insist upon going to Curtis? Fine, but you have to be granted an exemption for justifiable reasons. There are very few justifiable reasons for a kid to drive to Curtis from the north shore every day.

So that's why most Curtis players aren't real good at the next level with the exception of a few?

That tends to be the case with many of the smaller private schools.
The kids at those schools don't tend to be superb athletes as much as being coached to execute properly to the limit of their abilities.
You will occasionally get a true stud athlete coming through these schools, but you're far more likely to see a bunch of guys who will be ** or *** at best in the various recruiting services.

So you are acknowledging that the choices you are making are based upon athletics and not academics.

My OP said there would be waivers for certain circumstances. If you wanted to compete in a sport that wasn't offered at the nearest school, a waiver could be granted. Of course, that doesnt mean if you live in LaPlace, you could get a waiver to attend Brother Martin.

You realize that some private schools are non-religious and some are from different sects. Your idea is idiotic.

Heaven knows if it was only based on academics no one would go to public schools.

well yeah it's 2013. parents and kids take that into account. if your school doesn't have a good football team, you're losing kids who want to play for one (and parents who want to watch one)
and kids = state funding

Choosing Brother Martin or Jesuit over Ecole Classique could have very little to do with athletics.

you are paying the bill, you can choose to go where ever you want for whatever reason you want.

maybe the idea could work if a kid can go to nearest private school in a class... for example a Shreveport kid could be eligible at Byrd, Evangel, or Calvary since they're all in different divisions. A NOLA kid could be eligible at Jesuit, De La Salle, Newman, or Country Day.

I still don't think that should be done. I mean, you can drive down a street in Algiers and see bumper stickers for Newman, CD, St Aug, Holy Cross, Jesuit, and Brother Martin. And that's in Algiers, where there aren't that many kids that go to private school relative to population.

I would say 99% of the white kids do, and a majority of the asians.

two notes about the 1A nonselect bracket...
Grand Lake in their first year of varsity competition, is guaranteed IN the playoffs
South Cameron, who was once a power but has fell on hard times with an enrollment of 82 students, is guaranteed IN the playoffs

It's not just the private schools
House approves resolution to make Mc35&McMain selective admission school

Several parents asked for the ability to screen applicants, to ensure that athletes were admitted to schools that offer their disciplines. School Board member Nolan Marshall II said that without the ability to screen applicants, established sports programs and bands might end up folding for lack of participants.
