Yeah, i'll wait until the criminal/civil trials and for the ncaa's own investigation if any other rules were violated.
i'm leaning towards no though.

The school administration was part of it and so was the athletic dept. Let the players transfer and play immidiately. frick the football program in the arse.

quote:i don't think we can say that. we know that individuals at seemingly every level of the athletic department knew about this: janitors, assistant coaches, the head coach, the AD, the president of the university and they failed to act. we know that people in the criminal justice system knew what went on, and presumably continued to see the second mile organization operate as normal.
The people responsible are either dead, in jail or unemployed.
i think this is way beyond a few individuals. we are talking about a culture in which a grown man saw another grown man rape a child, and all bravado aside, chose to talk to route things through the athletic department instead of the police. getting rid of a few individuals doesn't change that.

From an NCAA perspective, the worst part of the report was that PSU was not only not in compliance with eligibility rules, but that they had no process in place to make sure they were. The fact the football program was accidentally violating federal law due to its own lax compliance department is a huge NCAA issue.

Yes. Death penalty. If any "lack of institutional control" ever deserved the DP, this is it.
It was almost like "too much control".
While we're at it, I'm with Bowden. Take that statue down!
You can leave Paterno's win record. It'll always be tainted, and it'll serve as a good reminder that "winning at all costs" is not a worthy pursuit.

I would be really interested to see if the state legislature goes after the school with sanctions since it's a state school.

No death penalty for Penn State.

I've been on the side of no NCAA action in this case, but that makes complete sense. A lax compliance dept. does certainly fall under NCAA jurisdiction.
Good post Baloo.

The parts of the Freeh Report on PSU’s non-existent compliance department were devastating. From an NCAA perspective, it gave them all the ammunition they need. Anyone who says there is no NCAA issue clearly did not read the Freeh Report. There’s a lot in there about the compliance department’s failure to do, well, anything.

quote:Punish bricks and beams? Yeah, that will do a lot of good. The idea that the school, instead of individual human beings, should be punished simply makes no sense at all.
To those who say no death penalty (Im not even fully for that) how about severe sanctions? I dont understand how anyone thinks the NCAA should do nothing when the AD was actively covering it up in the interests of sports.
IMO I think the program needs to be turned into Baylor basketball. Take away a severe amount of scholarships bowl bans for a decade (exaggeration but yall get the point).

So yall want to hurt the current players, students, and local businesses all of whom had nothing to do with this event. That makes perfect sense.

Most people are stupid, irrational, and quick to jump to conclusions.

This may have already been posted, but Emmert isn't ruling out the death penalty... LINK
