The New York Yankees on Monday announced that legendary Yankees play-by-play radio voice John Sterling, who has called 5,420 regular-season Yankees games and 211 postseason Yankees games, is retiring effective immediately

He’s 85, I guess it’s time. I think he did PBP for the Braves as well before the Yankees

He did. One of the early TBS guys along with Skip Carey, Pete Van Wieren, and Ernie Johnson.

That’s where my thoughts went as well since he announced it so suddenly. Hopefully he’s just burnt out and that’s it.

I loved him when he was with the Braves. Great announcer.

Also called the Hawks for a spell when he worked in Atlanta. Liked him when he was with the Braves until he turned into a cartoon character with the Yankees.

I hope his health is OK and that he can have a lot of good years in retirement. Hope his family is also OK.

Really hate this. Hearing John on the call makes me think of my dad and watching the Yankees with him. End of an era.

The Athletic is reporting that it’s “health concerns” and Sterling has said he will meet with the media and discuss it this weekend.

When you’re 85, you have earned the right to get up one morning and say, “You know what? I’m done with this grind and I am going to enjoy the time I have left.”

I’m a couple of decades younger and just semi retired, and I hurt 17 different places when I get out of bed in the morning, and I can’t imagine still doing it at 85.

He was my favourite

His best home run call imo was Robinson Cano - he would break out into this corny ragtime number of "WELLLLL don't cha KNOOOOWW, it's Robbie Canoooo"

Dude is a legend. I grew up listening to Yankee games on the radio. Would fall asleep to Sterling going ape shite on a home run from Tino Martinez or Paul O’Neill.

Sterling had scaled down his workload in recent seasons and had planned to only make a few road trips this season, as how to handle his time moving forward had been a topic of discussion in recent years.

But after making the season-opening road trip through Houston and Arizona, and then calling the first three home games, Sterling decided it was the right time to step away.

“I guess if I was smarter and I’m not, if I was smarter I would have done this March 1 or March 31,” Sterling said Monday on WFAN. “I’m the greatest sports fan in history and I got TVs all over the joint and I should have stopped then. I just don’t want to do any more work. I’ve worked for 64 years and in July I’ll be 86, so let’s face it, my time has come.

“I guess I could just do the home games, but you know what’s true, fellas? I don’t want to get up in the afternoon and have to go somewhere,” Sterling added. “I will be very happy in my retirement.”

Good for him. Like I said, he’s earned that right.
