Magic in New Orleans with Maravich would have been fun to watch

Except they Jazz moved to Utah before Magic's rookie season and Maravich was with the Celtics.

With the New Orleans Jazz-

Lakers — Sent 1977 second round pick (#44-Essie Hollis), 1978 first round pick (#16-Jack Givens) to Jazz and received 1977 first round pick (#6-Kenny Carr), 1978 first round pick (#8-Freeman Williams), 1979 first round pick (#1-Earvin Johnson (a.k.a. Magic Johnson)), 1980 second round pick (#26-Sam Worthen) from Jazz on 1976-08-05 as compensation for Lakers 1976-07-19 signing of free agent Gail Goodrich

so the jazz send 3 first round picks (77/78/79) and a second round pick (80) for the Lakers second round pick in 77, a first round draft pick in 78 and 33y/o Gail Goodrich in August 1976?

awesome

Goodrich retired in 1979 FYI

if the Jazz don't sign Goodrich, keep their picks, don't trade a broken down Maravich and still suck enough to get Magic in the 1979 draft they might have stayed in NOLA

Magic was destined to be in LA, the showtime Gods wouldn't have it anyway.

i think the owner had financial difficulties, and sold to interest in Utah. Utah was upset their ABA team did not make the NBA after the merger, it had done pretty well.

These three are nothing compared to Indiana State. This is a team with no history that went to the finals and since then nothing again. I agree, the last cinderella. Before that it had to be the UTEP over Kentucky, the biggest ever.

In Bird's rookie year 79-80, the Celts won more games than the previous two seasons combined....Cowens and the rest of the team were essentialy unchanged. The following year, with the addition of Parish and McHale, the Celts won the Championship...1981 with Bird, Parish, Maxwell, Archibald and Chris Ford starting (McHale was 6th man). Then of course they won two more in 84 and 86, while playing in 4 straight finals from 84-87 with Bird, Parish, McHale, Johnson and Ainge starting.

Bird finished with Nat'l Coll. Player of the Year in 1979, Rookie of the Year in 1980, the 3 championships (of 5 finals) and 3 MVP's (84, 85, 86). Also, the Olympic Gold in 92. He is simply in the top 10, arguably the top 5 all-time. His measurables weren't good, but his instincts, timing, vision, anticipation and positioning were arguably the best ever. A LEGEND!!

I saw Bird play against Centenary the year before when he was a junior. CC had Robert Parish and were slight favorites. Bird was the tallest player on the ISU team and actually played offensive center, playing a high post with his back to the basket. He either passed off or turned and took the jumper. He didn't make any flashy passes and really long shots (no 3 pointers then) but ISU won the game in an upset by about 10 and the stats the next day were amazing.

He had something like 30 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists. Everyone was like "how did that happen?" His teammates were pretty bad.

He did take it easy on defense. No way they would have him cover Robert Parish. Parish got his points but it wasn't enough. Who knew then they those two guys would play together for the Celtics some day?

What an awesome game for you to look back on. Didn't know thay had played. I lived an hour or so from the Boston Garden for 17 yrs and made 3 games a year on average during the entire Bird era and it was great.

I also saw Steadman Graham play for Hardin Simmons vs. CC. He was their leading scorer in a losing effort. Graham ended up being richer than Parish. He's Mr. Oprah Winfrey.

I had heard the team did well financially, not sure about on the court toward the end or if they knew they weren't going to be part of the merger and dumped players.

This was an AWESOME display by ONE player!! Bird got his team of unknown forgotten about Bball players to get where they got!!! It was NOT a one man effort though. MAGIC was SUPREME as a bball player as far as getting people to be better but what Bird did THAT year was and still is unheard of!!!!

It was a GOOD but not GREAT game. Bird went for 7-21 shooting. And of course we know why. MSU put two on him the WHOLE game. This was something I will never forget. MAGIC WAS MAGIC, A one-of-a-kind human being that was great at what he did, AND MADE SURE everyone knew it!!!!!

They WON the NC in 77?, they are in the Big East, I think most consider that a major conference.

I was at that game. Butch Lee, Bo Ellis and Jerome Whitehead were the shite. They beat the Cornbread Maxwell led UNCC team and beat UNC in the final who had beaten the Reggie Theus led UNLV team in what was Tark the Shark's first Final Four.

They didn't get nearly as far as Indiana St., but David Robinson made Navy a team that was capable of an upset.

Right, Marquette has a decent history before Wade and are in a, maybe the major conference in Basketball, even getting to the Final Four from CUSA is not that surprising.

The best comparison to Bird and Indiana State might be Jacksonville with Artis Gilmore, who played UCLA in the 1970 final.
