Do Cleveland people pull for Ohio State? And Philly people for Penn State?
Posted on 6/3/26 at 1:54 pm to McMillan
It is so weird to count these things this way
Cleveland is all OSU
Philadelphia is massively PSU
New York doesn't give a shite about Rutgers
That like saying LSU isn't in the New Orleans market

This is kind of silly because colleges are historically not located in major cities.

This list is stupid. Fanbases in all of those cities except for Hartford already have P4 programs an hour or 2 away that most of the locals root for. Does whoever made this list think that Cleveland has more Akron Zips fans than Ohio State fans? Or that Tampa isn't Gator territory? Or that San Antonio fans are rooting for UTSA over the Longhorns? Charlotte split between UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, and USCe?

Cleveland is all Ohio State.
Cincinnati, conversely, is a very divided college town. Tons of anti-Ohio State sentiment, w some support there.
But Cincinnati, Xavier, Notre Dame (Cincy is very catholic), and even Indiana and Kentucky factor in

I mean its an actual border town, that makes sense.
Heck you're slightly closer to Lexington, KY than you are Columbus, OH if I'm not mistaken.

Exactly. It’s adjacent to a ton of huge fanbases. Allegiance is chopped up for sure.
Proctor and Gamble brings in a ton of transplants as well from the tri-state area

Charlotte has a ton of West Virginia fans. The research triangle grads tend to disseminate throughout the country and the ones who stay in NC care more about basketball. But for some reason West Virginia fans all seem to migrate to Charlotte and they bring all of their bad habits out on gameday.

I think Charlotte has the highest concentration of SC grads outside of South Carolina in the country.
DC and Atlanta are close. NYC is up there, too.

Charlotte is mostly UNC, USCjr, or Clemson.
Not many Wake fans outside of the Triangle, and everyone hates Duke.

Who the hell is claiming to be the NYC P4 team?

Charlotte has a ton of Clemson fans. Also a city with a bunch of N.C. State and Appalachian State fans.

Rutgers very technically. The same way Houston and SMU take care of it for Dallas and Houston
But should also also show why this is dumb. What major cities in this country actually have these schools to a material degree? LA and Miami and then....? Would we say Austin and/or Seattle apply here cause I wouldn't call either a major urban city on the same level as like Miami and/or LA but maybe im wrong
Tempe is essential Phoenix so I'd add that. LA, Miami, Atlanta, and Phoenix are probably the only 4. Northwestern technically works for Chicago i guess but there are probably more ND fans in Chicago than Northwestern
2nd thought can remove Atlanta to since I have a hard time believing GT is any different. So probably just LA, Miami, and maybe Phoenix

What’s the cut off?
Why does Rutgers count for NYC but not any of the florida schools for Tampa or Ohio State for Cleveland?

I'm not sure I understand your point. GT is absolutely in Atlanta - it's smack in the middle of the west side of Midtown. And GT is in the ACC, which is considered P4. Or are you saying that Atlanta isn't an urban city?
I'm really turned around here.

I'm saying that you have urban cities that have these schools but they themselves are still after thoughts in them which seems to me what actually matters. Like Chicago and Northwestern or, maybe im wrong, Atlanta and Georgia Tech
The only ones I can think of off the top of my head, true major urban population centers with in market schools that the population cares about, are LA and Miami and maybe Phoenix

Vandy in Nashville, although Vandy is definitely second to UT and probably behind some other SEC schools there as well
