The Deshaun Watson trade seems like a mistake at the moment, so this is not surprising.

The Browns finally took down the Ravens. Well, they basically took out the AFC North. This is equivalent to a Nuclear bomb. Browns fricked themselves with that Watson contract, but the fallout from it fricked the Ravens too. And let's not forget, Joe Burrow's rookie deal is done with the Bengals after this 2023 season, what is stopping him from asking for that kind of money? He has had more success than both Watson and Lamar...by a long shot.

No shite.

Someone he trust needs to tell him to get over his hubris. He's using the Watson deal as the benchmark. But that deal was horrible last year and the rest of the league knew it. The smart thing to do would be to leverage that deal to get a huge (but not quite Watson huge) deal. Instead, he has seemingly drawn a line in the sand that he's not taking anything less in basically an ego move. In doing so, he may not ever get an opportunity again at the money being offered him now.

With the 5th year option it’s after the ‘24 season for Burrow and Hebert, but both are available for extensions now.

FIFY. Whoever signs Jackson to a lengthy, expensive extension, whether fully guaranteed or mostly guaranteed, is making a franchise crippling mistake.

Who was the running back for the Steelers that thought he was hot shite, did something like this and then fell flat on his face?
This situation reminds me of that. He’s going to go somewhere like Detroit and find out how good he really had it in Baltimore

LeVeon Bell. Got big paid by the Jets and immediately stopped caring, a la Julio Jones.

This.

What Deshaun got is the new market for young elite QBs

I don't think that's going to become the market. I think teams are going to correctly view that as a desperate franchise making a horrifically stupid decision.

The facts are, you need an elite QB to win a Super Bowl now, and there are only so many. This isn’t the old NFL where Brad Johnson could get it done

The Browns may have given him that money but the Saints and the Falcons were probably close

Even more crippling is the loss of 2 1sts to get him

Those 1sts provide cheap labor

Lol yeah, that's not how a 5th year option works. You don't just say "Hey, you're good, can we pay you one more year like we are now?"

You need elite or you need cheap. Lamar Jackson is neither. Elite is way, way, way overused when talking about QBs. Since the rookie wage scale was introduced, only one team has won a Super Bowl paying a QB at the top of the market, and that was KC last season.

The big mistake teams often make is that they give their cheap QBs massive extensions assuming they'll be able to keep up their level of play as the talent around them gets priced out due to the QB contract. This gets more GMs fired than anything else because that's a fast, fast ticket to NFL purgatory.

I can’t believe I’m about to type this but $30,000,000/yr for an elite starting quarterback is kind of a steal at this point

Is it a better deal than what Burrow will ask for after the 5th year? Sure. But let's not pretend like paying your QB less than 6 million a year is the same as paying them almost 30 million a year. Bengals will have to cut some key players to account for the extra 23 million being allocated to one player in the 2024 season.

They have no choice. You let Burrow or Herbert walk?

That’s not the level of QB he’s referring to I’m sure
