or was he saying, "We're going to invite you if no one better is available."
If that's the case it would basically the same thing Tech told the I-bowl. "Give us more time to see if we get a better invite."
I guess we'll never know.

No difference if it's not in writing.
Funny thing is that Tech had exactly what happened in writing. Tech would be selected if Iowa State is not available. Yet somehow it's someone else's fault.

There is no reason to say yes if the bowl you want to go to is saying they are going to invite you. Y'all are looking at this in hindsight. He was making decisions with bogus information.
this is worse that the bullshite spin Dick Morris gave when explaining his landslide Romney fail.

2 verbal offers.
Verbal contracts are definitely binding in this country..
I feel that tech wont own up for them royally fricking themselves in the entirety of this process

Now that's a good point. Tech AD got played. Liberty Bowl guy had nothing to lose by telling him "we'll take you even if Iowa St is available" because he already had the opposite in writing.

It is 100% on Tech. They know the rules in place, did they not? They made the decision to stall on the Independence Bowl, did they not?
100% the fault of Louisiana Tech's AD. He knew the rules in place, made a gamble, it blew up in his face. It is ALL on him. No one else can be blamed.
Nailed it.

If the LB did in fact, guarantee Tech a spot, no matter what, some blame, obviously not all of it, should be had on the LB as well
We know BVDV took a risk without anything in writing, we now know that risk blew up in his face, but if you cannot see that some blame should be placed on the LB for leading Tech on, then you are just being unreasonable.

Guarantees happen all the time in all walks of life and especially business. I've been guaranteed raises and promotions to no avail before.

The Tech AD is an idiot and screwed them. If he would have told the Indy bowl yes it would have been in writing and a done deal. Yet he wants to take the Liberty Bowls "guarantee". If the Liberty Bowl was sold on Tech then they would have made them an offer. Being as they didn't any intelligent person would conclude that obviously they are holding out to see if something better comes along. He took a gamble which screwed the players and fans. No one else is to blame, not the bowl system, not the Liberty Bowl, just Tech's idiot AD.

Tech AD Office Secretary: Louisiana Tech Athletic Department, May I help you?
Indy Bowl Rep: Yes, I’m calling from the Independence Bowl. May I speak to Mr. Van De Velde please?
Tech AD Office Secretary: Hold please
Bruce Van De Velde: This is Bruce Van De Velde
IBR: We are inviting you to play in the Independence Bowl this year. How about it?
BV: Well, I was expecting a invitation from the Liberty Bowl. Can you give me some time?
IBR: Sure, I’ll give you a deadline and if I don’t hear back, I’ll take it as a decline.
BV: Sounds great, thanks.
Liberty Bowl Rep: Hello, this is the liberty bowl rep. How can I help you?
BV: Yes, I am checking on our previous conversation on us playing in your bowl. What’s the decision.
LBR: I’m not sure and can’t let you know right away. We might be able to get Iowa St.
BV: Well, I can’t wait and take a chance, so thanks anyway.
IBR: Hello, can I help you?
BV: Yes, this is Bruce, We’re coming to Shreveport. Tell those WarHawks to get ready! See you on the 28th.

The real conversation, according to Bruce Van de Velde and Wac Commisioner Jeff Hurd:
BV: I know we have this written agreement that you will invite us tomorrow if Iowa St is not available. The Independence Bowl is pressuring me for an answer on their invite and have given me a deadline 3:00 today to accept the invitation.
LBR: Bruce, at this point, we are inviting Tech to the Liberty Bowl no matter what happens.
BV: OK, see you on the 31st.

"At this point" means the situation is still fluid.
a real invite is "We are taking Tech right now, your formal invite is being faxed over, and a press release is forthcoming."
I'm sorry but BVDV is a full of shite moron.

Unlikely that the AD acts independently..more likely that deep pocketed boosters had more of a say in this decision, and he is the PR scapegoat. Relatives with ties to LATECH say follow the big $$ backers to find the authors of this flustercluck.
