Twitter video of incident

The Korean Tour has suspended current money leader Bio Kim for three years after he made an obscene gesture to fans during the final round of a tournament this past weekend.

Holding a one-shot lead on the 16th hole of the DGB Financial Group Volvik Daegu Gyeongbuk Open in Gumi, South Korea, Kim reacted angrily after a cellphone camera went off during his downswing. His drive ended up going about 100 yards, according to the Korea Herald.

After the poor shot, Kim, 29, turned to the crowd, flipped off fans and slammed his driver into the ground. The incident was captured on live TV in Korea.

On Monday, the Korean Professional Golfers' Association, which operates the Korean Tour, voted unanimously to suspend Kim for the next three years. It also fined him about $8,350 in U.S. currency.

In a statement, the Korean Tour said: "Kim Bi-o damaged the dignity of a golfer with etiquette violation and inappropriate behavior."

Hard to know where this fits into the Korean culture. But yes it sounds like it is overkill to me.

Also, golfers shouldn’t be so sensitive to noise in their backswing given the rise of smartphones.

If he was born in North Korea and happened upon a golf club, he probably wouldn't know whether to use it to hit something or hump it.

Know how I know you've never had a phone go off in your backswing?

If Happy Gilmore taught us anything it was that golf needs some irreverence.

So the article says downswing and not backswing. I would like to see the video without the 2 Korean motor mouths as the audio. Also I wonder what they did to the fan who caused this? Hopefully house arrest for the same 3 years.

I thought phones were banned at golf tournaments?

Either way, as an avid and very mediocre golfer, myself, I don't see what the big deal is about a little noise. I hit shots all the time with traffic nearby, kids in a backyard screaming, partners chit-chatting around me, etc. and even though I am no pro, I have never blamed a bad shot on noise around me.

Completely different cultures. Asians are super uptight about respect and face. Not surprised at all.
