People have been assuming for a long time that Kirby Smart wouldn't make a good HC. I'm ready to see what the man can do.

Who? Where?

Every good HC started as an assistant at some point. Obviously all coordinators could be hit or miss when they graduate up to HC, but just looking at the resume/pedigree smart is pretty damn safe.

On this board or the SECR. I have been asking for years if Smart were going to leave Alabama for a HC job and I would get the "There's a reason he hasn't left Alabama yet He doesn't have the HC mentality ".

I personally never believed it. I'm ready to see what the guy can do.

I think just 3 or 4 years ago he was still much more of a Saban puppet than he is now. He seems to have vast majority of control of the defense now, especially during the games. He's the one if the defensive huddles.

I think he is going to be a success at UGA for three reasons:

1. He is a GREAT recruiter
2. He will always have a very solid defense
3. People apparently really like to work with him i.e. won't scare away good staff members

He just needs to make the right OC hire and he will be a big success in the East. That program already has a ton of talent and support.

ETA:

He could also be a Muschamp and completely buttfrick the offense. I hope he doesn't though, I like when UGA is good.

Yeah and at LSU, Muschamp was not the DC at all really. He was the defensive screamer on the sidelines. Those defenses were 100% Saban.

The same for Kirby at the beginning of the Bama run, but Saban gradually trusted him with more and more control.

Exactly, he was going to be offered a high profile job sooner or later. I think UGA did a good job going after someone in the SEC.

People keep bringing up "Oh I wouldn't trade Richt for Smart". It's possible that UGA wanted a breath of fresh air in the program (Which like LSU).

Oklahoma is a Top 3 program historically, but the ceiling at UGA is higher than that of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma has had great coaches and nearly unmatched historical success, but they haven't had a top 10 recruiting class since 2010 IIRC.

In state talent is a large part of the top coaching destinations. For instance, it is the sole reason LSU is almost unanimously considered a better gig than Tennessee, despite UTs historical supremacy.

I'm excited to see what Smart can do as well, but it doesn't necessarily exclude him from being an underwhelming hire considering the prestige of UGA.

The last few major openings have been underwhelming from a big name standpoint - USC, Texas, UGA, even UF with McElwain. I think HCs at top 30 Power 5 programs are starting to realize that the playoffs open the door for success at Iowa and UNC just as much as they do at Oklahoma and Alabama, but with a fraction of the stress/expectations. Hell, Memphis and Houston are willing to pay up to $3M for a head coach. It makes the idea that a Jimbo Fisher or a Dabo Swinney would leave for another college program even more asinine.

ETA I'm fully aware that my second point somewhat negates my first point. Perhaps top coordinators are the best you can expect, even at a school like UGA.

So you're reasoning is that they are offensive coaches? Do you know what Alabama's strength is year in and year out? Saban may be the man there, but do me a favor and go look up highest paid DCs and tell me if you hunk Smart really didn't have to do shite. You don't compensate a guy that much to basically be a puppet.

even UF with McElwain.

That was a brilliant hire after what he did at Colorado State. Smart is unproven as HC so this is a huge gamble for UGA IMO. And canes fans on local radio here are insufferable taking about the return of da U

It most certainly is.

Top 15 imo.
