Thisnhold out situations are always about who blinks first. Usually a conclusion is reached with either side giving in. But what if the Raiders just said F it, you have a contract if you don’t want to play you don’t play and you don’t get paid.

Couldnthe Raiders take this position through the duration of the remaining years of Mack’s contract?

Does Mack call their bluff and sit out this year and every year thereafter?

Certainly seems the Raiders have the upper hand here in this standoff.

quote:

Raiders DE Khalil Mack will not report to team before its second preseason game Saturday, per source, meaning he will be fined another $814,000, bringing his two missed preseason game total to $1.628 million. More important for both sides: there is no end in sight, per source.

Of course they can, but then they come off as the team that won't work with players. Then players don't want to go or stay there and then they stink. You can't look at this situation in a vacuum, it's trickles all the way down.

I still don't get why they won't just pay him.

I'm sure he wants a ton of money but the dude was all-pro at 2 positions in the same year.

If someone with that record doesn't deserve to get paid, who does?

You don’t let the inmates run the asylum. Players will always go there: 1) they want to play football; and 2) the Raiders have money.

This isn’t about working with players. It’s about not giving in tomamselfish assholes demands. You don’t like a contract, don’t sign it.

Mack won't sit out a year. He will lose too much money. Players have a timeline to make as much money as they can. He sits out a year he loses the chance to make millions for one year. Players, on average, have 5 years to make as much money as they can. Him sitting out a year is a poor business decision

Let him fricking sit. Baseball players play for nickels for YEARS before they even get their first contract. You sign the contract you're obligated to play.

With that said we're headed towards an NFL strike in 2021 without a doubt.

It's the same thing. Baseball players sign contracts when they're drafted and then make dog shite for like 7 years before they even see free agency. Mack has played how many seasons? Dude plays well till the end of his contract and he'll get paid out the arse. If I'm the Raiders I'd let him rust away. The Raiders aren't a playoff team yet anyways.

Of course, he has this year under contract plus 2 franchise tag years left, he would have to report at some point or go broke.

Teams are very hesitant to pay defensive players big time money because it is believed to be an offensive league and only offensive players should make the most money. As a result your 2 best defensive players in football Mack and Donald, are in the middle of holdouts (2 times now for Donald).

I wouldn't pay Donald either and I'm a Rams fan. He's a great player but a DT isn't a position I'm spending ridiculous money.

As an organizarion, the Raiders will look bad across the league if they can’t this deal done. Mack is one of the premier pass rushers in the league. It’s a must you pay the man.

no, if he sits out, his contracts just pushes back a year if I'm not mistaken.

Anyone that’s compares baseball and football contracts does not know how either work.

Baseball contracts are Guaranteed
Football contracts are not Guaranteed

That difference alone is why in the NFL the players have to hold out. It is their only leverage. The only thing guaranteed in an nfl contract is the signing bonus and guaranteed money.

For example: a baseball contract of 10 years / 100 million is worth more than a football contract of 10 years /250 million with only 10 million guaranteed. In baseball the contracts always pay in full. In football the team can do what ignorant fans get mad at players for doing all the time and decide to not honor their end of the bargain.

Yea, forgot where I heard it, but I heard they just don't have much money.

But they did just sign a coach to a $100mil contract, but then again, maybe that stupidity is part of the reason why they don't have money.

What kind of comparison is this?

Do baseball players not sign a contract based off of where they're drafted? Do they not make damn near the league minimum for years after that?

Bryce Harper for example didnt make more than 5 million a year until his 7th year.

Mack will probably blink and walk in the off season.. he’s scheduled to make 14 million this year I believe and will garner a huge free agent contract on the open market.. Non way he’ll sit out the year as it could potentially hurt his free agent value.. There seems to be some mention that the Raiders don’t have The upfront cash to pay the signing bonus in a responsible manner to the club..
