frick, i remember getting whistled for three seconds when i strolled at a leisurely pace across the paint at the baseline under the goal in some motion. nba refs are definitely the GOATs

Refs are there to watch the game too

Hopefully, the league office is embarrassed so that they tell all officials behind the scenes they will lose game checks if shite like that happens again. It's really a joke.

not to be a stickler but that is definitely not a 9 step travel. maybe 7 step.

Yeah. That was 7. The first two steps are the natural steps as he receives the ball. Those definitely don't count.

As someone who watches a lot of NBA, I can get frustrated at times, but I never get as pissed as I do over the game changing terrible calls in NFL and college football.

I don't even get how players do this kind of thing. It's second nature to not move your pivot foot.

It would feel really strange just sliding all over the floor like he was doing.

You know its bad when I now get aggravated when they actually call it because they let it go the first 10 times

Wtf?

If he took 9 steps he took 9 steps.

It's equally weird to me that none of the Heat players or coaches were losing their fricking minds asking for a traveling call. Surely they noticed him just walking around while holding the ball over his head

Wrong. You can take two steps as you gather a pass. Players don't just stop on a dime once the ball hits their hands. If he set his feet after those first two steps as he was coming towards the ball, it would be perfectly fine, and nobody would have noticed it. It's the 7 steps after that that are bad.

From NBA.com, you downvoting assholes.

A player who receives the ball while moving is allowed a two count rhythm but must release the ball prior to the third step touching the floor.

So he took 9 total steps.

frick, am I really arguing about this? If a player catches the ball on the way to a layup or dunk and takes 3 steps, I'm pretty sure most people would say "he took 3 steps". Not, "he took 1 step".

A layup is a completely different circumstance though. Travel rules are different when you pick up the dribble on the move. Those first two steps had nothing to do with the travel. They are optional steps. If he stops on a dime and doesn't use them, he doesn't get to save them. They have nothing to do with the traveling on the play.

I understand your point, but people are acting like he took 9 illegal steps in this thread, as if he went off a pivot foot.

It would be 9 steps in Europe. 7 in the NBA. You are right. In Europe, they are supposed to start dribbling immediately.

The refs in today's game are pretty bad but in fairness they were bad twenty years ago also.
