Who was that dude who also played for the Mariners (a little after Griffey) who made all the Spider Man catches? Tall lanky black guy. Wasn’t he a better fielder than the Kid?

Yeah - I thought this thread was strictly about CF defense at first. He was the best fielder IMO but arm strength wasn’t as talked about back then and obviously he was a pedestrian hitter

said I’ve watched both of their careers from the beginning
so you would say you’ve watched an equal amount of Griffey and trout?

I think trout is prolly better, but mainly because of injuries.

To me an injury free Griffey is best player in last 40 years outside of bonds. I think pre-steroid bonds is best player since 1980 and certainly post steroid.

Trout may end up better than both and is certainly right there with them.

This fricking genius.......sorry sparky, Trout is a great player but Griffey Jr. was the best all-around CF in the modern era. I’ve watched Griffey and Trout throughout their entire career and Griffey was the better player point blank. If he didn’t get hurt as much as he did later in his career, he’d probably be the GOAT.

I’m just not a “his stats are better, he’s better” kinda guy. I just use the cliche “eye test” and seeing both from the beginning it’s KGJ.

Modern era?

The Shift Era and The Steroid Era arent the same time. Baseball as slow to adapt as it’s been still shows distinctive traits that these didn’t play in the same era

Kenny Lofton. Top 15 all time stolen bases for a career. 5 gold gloves. LIFETIME .300 average. No roofs or hgh.

KGJ was THE best when healthy. Problem was that he was unhealthy a decent amount. If I am picking a team from that that era, give me Lofton

I like Griffey and his impact on my childhood as much as the next guy, but the numbers don't support this at all.

I couldn't tell you what Trout looks like, but he is the GoaT already in his career and it's not up for debate.

I loved Griffey, but he never even led his league in OPS or OPS+.

Trout has already led his league in OPS 4 times and OPS+ 6 times. FFS, he's been top 2 in MVP voting 7 out of 8 seasons (finished 4th the other year, b/c he only played 114 games). He's already 6th all time in career MVP voting shares.

I’m really surprised at how many people are saying Jr over Trout. I get the nostalgia factor but come on

I’d argue his hitting competition was a superior class of talent/roids.
