KU Athletics has signed coach Bill Self to a lifetime contract. It's a new five-year rolling agreement that automatically adds one year at the conclusion of each season for the remainder of his career.

Between the NOA and getting pantsed by USC, he earned it amirite?

Wild to think that he replaced Roy Williams at KU. What a fricking hire.

When’s it time to start talking about Self as an underachiever?

The Big 12 streak was literally the fans pride and joy for the last 6 years or so of that run. Without that, people are scratching their head going, feels like he should have done more. Does he ever win another?

Self is an overrated bum. No UNC fan wanted him.

Coach K and Jay Wright are the only active coaches left with more than one (not counting Pitino). I would just say that it's hard to win the NCAA Tournament. Wright did it with a lot of the same core, too. Self had that chance in 2010 with some scraps left from the 2008 team and blew it against Northern Iowa. 2010 was a pretty weak year and they were on the other side of the draw as Kentucky.

But Self is only 58. Assuming no major NCAA sanctions, he'll be back in the Final Four multiple times in the next 10 years. I would say he is the most likely coach to get to two out of any of the guys with one right now. Above Boeheim, Izzo, Calipari, and Bennett.

Few will probably get to two before any of those guys the way he has Gonzaga rolling, though.

Yeah, I don't get this at all. Kansas and Self are still under an ongoing investigation. So that alone probably would make other schools leery of paying huge money to lure him away from KU. That would undoubtedly include UNC. Plus, Kansas is one of the 5 or so bluebloods of CBB. There is really nowhere to move "up". At best he could make a lateral move, but I doubt that place is UNC. Williams didn't leave KU because it was a bad job. He left ONLY because an equally great job opened up at his Alma Mater. He wouldn't have left KU for any other job but UNC.

Is KU concerned that Self would leave for the NBA? If so, big deal? That would help the school to some degree in the potential sanctions and it would STILL be a very desirable job.

I get Texas Tech being willing to discuss bending over and giving Beard whatever he wanted to stay (i.e. a "life time contract"). But that is because Beard IS TTU basketball in terms of it being a championship contender. They will now go back to "also ran" status in the Big 12 because it is not a desirable job. Kansas can find a big another big name HC and has a long history of being great BEFORE Self stepped foot on campus.

We did this with Paul Hewitt and it was a complete disaster.

Will he, though? His teams seem to always play really tight in the tournament.

I mean, I know they expect more at KU but that streak was pretty fricking impressive.

I understand that no Big 12 program is even in the same atmosphere as KU, but they had to deal with some pretty good runs by most of the conference's teams at some point and they still came out on top over and over again.

Maybe, and I feel stupid saying he's "only" made 3 Final Fours, but he's been there 18 years, and never had a team lower than a 4 seed. He's also been a 1 seed seven times.

Given the strength of his teams entering March, I think it's fair to say he has underachieved a bit. Especially since KU has now apparently deemed him untouchable, despite the NCAA hovering around.

In fairness that seems to be KU problem, not just Self. Roy Williams had some terrific teams that bowed out early to the likes of UTEP, UVA, and Rhode Island.

Why does everyone say this? He won 14 straight conference championships. He only has one national championship, but hasn’t been lower than a four seed at KU. He has KU in the Final Four as a one seed at a rate that’s average compared to all other schools. If you’re a KU fan, do you wish KU had more championships and Final Fours? Yeah. Is the NCAA Tournament also on average the most randomized way to determine a champion? Yeah. The Northern Iowa and VCU losses weren’t great, but that’s the tournament.

If a lack of championships means he’s overrated, then what coach isn’t considered overrated at this point?

So what's the buyout with this Charlie Weiss deal?

That's where the real money is. I think Weiss got $30 million from Notre Dame just to end the contract.

Kansas gave him a hefty buyout too.

You add in the salaries at both stops and Weiss made $64.5 million for a record of 41-49.

Still no tweet from Vitale condemning Kansas for extending a coach whose program was caught up in the FBI investigation. Dan Wolken is a bleeding vag but at least he's consistent and is menstruating over this too.
