I still kind of believe....

Goodell is just so awful on every conceivable level.
Each new issue that arises, he finds a new and innovative way to frick it up. The Ray Rice thing was a slam dunk and he botched that one, too.
Keeping this Gordon thing unresolved for this long is screwing Gordon and the Browns over. There's no reason for it.

While I agree that Goodell continues to make himself look foolish in many of his decisions, the most recent delay was likely due to Harold Henderson and the appeals office not moving quickly. I assume the appeals office would be the ones that set the timetable for the appeal hearing and they are most certainly responsible for having 3 weeks between hearing and decision.
Granted, the hearing took place over 2 days and included lots of testimony from both sides but getting a transcript (which was supposedly one problem that added time) and coming to a decision should have been done within 7-10 days.
The really crappy thing is that if Gordon is suspended for a year, he's gone for 365 days. Which would now make Gordon ineligible to practice with the team for most of next preseason.

I don't think that's how it works

From ProFootballTalk
quote:
Instead, Gordon learned of his proposed suspension in early May at the latest, and yet his hearing didn’t begin until August 1. It’s now August 14, and a decision could still be a week away.
Which means that, if the suspension is upheld, Gordon will be gone until late August 2015, making it even harder for him to get ready for Week One.
And again:
quote:
The problem for Gordon and the Browns comes from the reality that, if he’s suspended for a full year, he’ll be banished for a full calendar year — 365 days. Which means that he won’t be eligible for reinstatement until the last couple of weeks before the start of the 2015 regular season. Word of the proposed suspension first emerged in May.

Yeah I agree but At this point Goodell gives 0 fricks about his image.
Plus he has an out in all of this...he can just blame it on the arbitrator and say he's the one that took so long and it was out of the NFL's hands

No, he's been playing in (or at least dressing out for) preseason games as well as practicing with the team.

I think suspended players are allowed to do,that already though
the pats have aWR Tyms that is suspended for 4 games and he is allowed to play,in the preseason and practice

The waiting so long to announce suspensions is ridiculous. We're one week away from the season and still waiting for an Aldon Smith decision that isn't awaiting any new information. They met a month ago and the legal proceedings are done.

Different procedures for different suspensions. POLICY AND PROGRAM FOR SUBSTANCES OF ABUSE (2010)
quote:
In regard to all suspensions other than a banishment imposed pursuant to Stage Three of the Intervention Program, the player shall be eligible to participate in all off-season (not including post - season games) and pre - season club functions, training programs, practices, pre - season games and meetings, up to and including the date of the team’s last pre-season game in the next NFL season. Additionally , the player shall be eligible, at the discretion of the club, to participate in all in - season club functions, training programs and meetings, but not in any in - season games or practices. . .
A player banished pursuant to Stage Three of the Intervention Program may not participate with his club in any way except to see his Treating Clinician for treatment purposes on club property, but he must vacate the premises immediately following termination of the treatment session with the Treating
Clinician.
The second part applies to Gordon who is in Stage three following his agreement to take a 2 game banand a 4 game check fine last year. The reason he has been able to practice and play is because his suspension was on appeal. Apparently, that will end tomorrow once it's announced (depending on if his suspension is overturned or upheld).

I think that because he appealed, it doesn't "take effect" as such. I remember a player recently accepting his suspension because he would then be back for the playoffs instead of playing late in the season.
