The NCAA essentially just said "If you are a Heisman winning or caliber QB, we dont give a flying frick what you do. If you are any other player of a lesser position or caliber then we will frick you."

Title:12.5.2.2 - Use of a Student-Athlete's Name or Picture Without Knowledge or Permission. If a student-athlete's name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, playing cards, posters) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete's knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Such steps are not required in cases in which a student-athlete's photograph is sold by an individual or agency (e.g., private photographer, news agency) for private use. (Revised: 1/11/97, 5/12/05)
Wait, what? How are you supposed to stop something if you dont know it's happening?
Wait, the NCAA has a rule book?
I thought they just make rules up as they go?

And you'd have to be a moron to believe that.

Well supposedly this is not about him profiting, as there's no proof. This is about him not preventing others to profit.

If the NCAA really couldn't turn up evidence that he took money, i.e., it was all cash, and no one was saying anything, then I'm glad they didn't suspend him because of what "they think probably happened." But they should've fricked Manziel on the "preventing others from profitting" clause that's being quoted...he should've gotten at least what AJ Green got for actually selling a jersey...half a season.

One half? Against Rice?
Christ on a cracker!

Don't bring this in to this discussion. The current rule states he can't profit off himself while he's in school if he wants to play football. He knew that going in, and he signed his name on the contract that stipulates that rule. If he didn't like it, he could've gone to the CFL or Arena league and profitted off his name all he wanted.

Right
It's not like he wasn't proactive in not preventing something.
He was very proactive in making it happen.

Exactly...are they expecting us to believe that Manziel thought those guys were going to take those thousands of items and hang them in their man caves? The NCAA really does make itself look stupid just about every time it does something.

Not suspending him would be less embarrassing for the NCAA

Serves him right. You show em NCAA!

I hope Rice puts 40 up on them in the first half

The NCAA should have done one of two things here. Either dont suspend him at all and say "Hey, we couldnt get anything proven". Or suspend him for the year and just tell everyone "this is to prevent this from happening in the future". Its not like a players union could appeal it. To suspend him for a half is a joke, but hey we are talking about the NCAA here.

According to the thread on the SEC Rant, they got him on the rule (paraphrasing) where he should have prevented someone else from profiting from his likeness or something like that. No proof on him protifing directly.
This makes literally every player in eligible for the first half.
NCAA football 14 is doing it. Universities do it.

What book? It sure wasn't War and Peace. More along the lines of Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
