More difficult conference than Conf-USA back when Cal coached. Pastner is also only 36, and Cal was 41 when he started at Memphis.

Cal had also already built Umass into a contender before that.

Why hasn't Rick Barnes or Scott Drew won anything? Both of them have had tons of talent over the years.

Pastner has coached two players that have played in the NBA, Elliot Williams and Will Barton. Big difference between getting five stars and getting top five players. Memphis hasn't been all that talented.

They have recruited at a top 10 level the past 5 years. It is the coaches job to develop that talent

That is true but we're comparing him to Calipari, who is getting guys who are ready to play at a high level right away.

Calipari's first Final Four team at Kentucky wasn't that talented.

Maybe compared to his other teams. Still had two lottery picks who were top 10 recruits and 4 other players who spent time in the NBA. Just saying, they're following the same strategy but Cal is working with a different level of talent.

One of those lottery picks never played a minute for Kentucky

And he has had success before approaching things like he does now. His recruiting ability mixed with Kentucky is just a perfect storm. It is sort of like Saban and Alabama.

Knight and Jones, who might have been just outside the lottery. Definitely agree on Cal at Kentucky being a perfect storm for recruiting. I can't remember, how good were his Memphis teams that didn't have Rose and Evans?

He finished at UMASS with 5 ranked teams, last 3 were in the top 10

It took longer to rebuild Memphis, but after 05 they were never outside of the top 10. He finished his last 3 seasons there with consecutive elite eights.

Not the full depth of talent. Rick Barnes had talent but he only had 3 or 4 talented guys at a time, not great talent, but good, then the rest of the roster was average to BAD. Durant was all Texas had his one year there. Same with Scott Drew, although he just now started to get more depth in terms of talent. You can't win anything without depth. There are plenty of teams with 1 or 2 really good players, but the difference comes with the rest of the roster.

Are you serious? They were more talented than 99% if not all of college basketball teams that season.

Roster

Eric Bledsoe
DeMarcus Cousins
Patrick Patterson
John Wall

There are 3 NBA All-Stars (Cousins, Wall, Bledsoe) in that line up….you are WAY off.

Umm that team lost in the Elite Eight

Cal's final four team was

Brandon Knight (Lottery Pick)
DeAndre Liggins (Late 2nd Round)
Josh Harrellson (Late 2nd Round)
Jon Hood (Still at UK)
Darius Miller (2nd Round)
Doron Lamb (Mid 2nd Round)
Stacey Pooler (transferred somewhere)
Jarrod Polson (still at UK/walk on)
Eloy Vargas (Playing overseas)
Terrence Jones (Late lottery, but didn't play like one his freshman year)

Terrence Jones highest point total during that Final Four run was 12.

Well there you go. A really talented team that didn't make the final four.

I accidentally clicked the wrong Kentucky name on wiki.

Calipari's style of motivation doesn't translate well to the NBA... and his biggest strength is recruiting.

i'm not saying he won't take another run at it, but he'd be foolish to do so.

A Jodie Meeks away from one IMO.

As for the OP, if he goes he goes. Thanks for the run because it's been a blast. Go get the next championship coach like we have in the past. I don't know that he goes though.

Doubt he goes. His son is a sophomore at LCA….I think he wants to chase UCLA title numbers for UK.
