re: Joel Klatt: The NCAA basketball tournament is the "dumbest tournament in all of sports"

That's the thing when it comes to a "true" champion. It all matters. It's not just about who is the hottest team at the end.
But from an entertainment value, it's not as fun, because it's basically 4-5 teams that win it every year. A lot more variance with a playoff which makes it more fun from a fan perspective.

NBA playoffs and even college baseball have the best structures to determine a true champion.
But you’re right, March madness is entertaining as hell

Well, we're getting there "Mr. College Football".
Crowning last years " champion" was just as dumb. Any other year Ohio State and their once "devastating" once important losses would've disqualified them easily from any consideration of being the best that year.
Oh wait, the regular season is just a seeding warm-up? Kinda like NCAA Basketball? The minute Oregon had to beat Ohio State TWICE to advance to the Title game and losing to Michigan to end the year meant nothing, was the death knell for the sport we once loved and the once last great regular season we knew and loved for over 100 years.

Using final KenPom ratings for the last ten tourneys + 1:
Is “final” after the conclusion of the tournament so the winner is assuredly getting an elevated rating?
Or, is this after the regular season (or end of conference tournaments)?

Douchebag would have given the gold to USSR over America in 1980.

the Cinderella teams are what makes the tournament more interesting

The NBA playoffs are the worst playoffs of any major US sport.
OVER half the league makes the (technically) playoffs. No other major sport has such a ridiculous proportion. On top of that, the league has "play in" games which are, in effect, playoff games which add an additional 4 teams (the 9 and 10 place teams in each conference) to the mix. All told, 2/3rds of the league makes the "playoffs", meaning it's seemingly more difficult to NOT make the playoffs.
Then, unlike the NFL and MLB where the playoffs are condensed to a compelling one month of action, the NBA drags it playoff out for 2 months! Because of that, there are many unwatchable blowouts throughout the entirety of the playoffs. By the time it gets to the end many people have lost interest

correct, which is why JK's take isn't "scorching hot" as some are proclaiming.

MLB keeps watering it down too... but not as bad as the NBA.
All about the money. More games.

I agree that too many teams make it and the play in games are stupid. But how many times has the worse team won a 7 game series over the course of 2 weeks?

This is entirely up to the conferences... they can auto-bid the regular season champ if they want. I think one (Ivy League maybe?) does it this way.
I didn’t know this!
Makes sense they choose conference tourney so people buy tickets and tune in.

The highest rated NCAAT games have always been between two major programs with some very few exceptions.
The first round averages over 8 million viewers per game with 32 games over two days. The final four averages 16 million.
Put a bunch of Minnesota versus Vanderbilt and South Carolina versus Purdue and let’s see what happens to those first round numbers

I’d love to see KenPom at end of regular season vs who makes the elite 8 every year and beyond. Surely it’s still mostly the best teams making it.
Tournament is awesome though.

Conferences are not required to have a conference tournament to determine the conference champion. The Big Ten and Ivy League did have conference tournaments until about 25 years ago.

If by dumbest he means hands down and unquestionably the best......then I agree.

I mean he's not entirely wrong. The tournament is fun and great for office pools and gambling but it's a rather absurd way to crown a champion.
A big single elimination tournament has a lot of variance.
It would be way less "fun" but if you took the top 16 seeds (1-4) and had them play best of 3 series to as advance you would get a *better" champion but it would be way less fun and unique.

The CFP is sort of a joke too. Expanding it doesn't fix the problems.
Miami won by not playing in their conference title game and Virginia lost out by playing in it.

I mean if you think about it logically, a single elimination tournament in basketball is a dumb way to crown a champion. BUT March Madness is so much more exciting than the NBA playoffs.

I don't necessarily disagree here, but the pros are such a different animal than college. In pro sports you've got a handful of teams taht are the cream of the crop, a handful of temas that just really suck, and then the majority of the rest of the league (this goes for pretty much any sports league) is kind of all jumbled up together without a shitton of difference. There's SO MUCH more parity in pro sports than in college.
contrast that to college football where you have about 75% of the playoff field having absolutely ZERO business playing for a championship.
