I dunno. Mayo doesn’t appear to be insane and he's a lot younger than Singletary so maybe he’ll actually listen to people.
He’s only a couple years younger than Mike McDaniel.

Rooney rule can be avoided if your contractually write out your succession plan and notify the league ahead of time. I’m sorry to burst your bubble
Interesting. Have there been examples of a white coach in a succession plans?

Under NFL rules, the minority interviewing requirements do not apply when there is a contractual succession plan in place. Previous examples include the Seattle Seahawks with Jim Mora Jr. (succeeding Mike Holmgren as coach), the Indianapolis Colts with Jim Caldwell (succeeding Tony Dungy as coach) and the Baltimore Ravens with Eric DeCosta (succeeding Ozzie Newsome as general manager).

You can avoid the Rooney Rule entirely, regardless of the race of the coach, if you establish it in writing and tell the NFL before the move happens
The pats did this a year ago when they reworked BB and Mayos contract and Mayo pulled himself from consideration of other jobs in the last cycle

Kevin O'Connell was in the same class too. Now Vikes HC.

Harbaugh was a DB coach before he was hired by Baltimore.
There are guys you hire to completely run 1 side of the ball and guys you hire for their ability to run the lockeroom and executive functions.

Mike Vrabel
Vrabel is probably the #2 option right now behind har-Baw, he was never going to NE, they’ve got a bottom 2 or 3 roster.

If it was written into his contract and planned, why would he at least not have been the DC? This makes 0 fricking sense to go from 4 years position coach to HC.
Just another instance where these professional teams are ran without brains.

Pats haven’t had a “DC” on staff since Patricia left. Belicheck loves to jerk around staff titles like that. They didn’t have an OC during the Patricia era either
Mayo has been the defacto DC. Steve Belicheck called in the plays but Mayo held the meetings, and did everything a DC would do besides just calling the plays in on the sideline. Being a head coach has nothing to do worth coordinating a defense

It seems BB intentionally tanked to 4-13 so the new coach has a higher ceiling. BB was likely paid extra.

I heard his first draft pick is going to be Noah K****.

We’re 4-13 with not a whole lot of young talent on the books, what’s the risk? And is hiring a retread really mitigating that risk?

I assume Mr. Mayo scored highly on his Rooney Rule test or Robert Kraft seeks capital from BlackRock.

Seems kinda surprising…
They literally had in his contract that he was the next man up

He’s at least an interesting one in that he’s neither an offensive or defensive guy in the traditional sense. He’s not a play caller with his own playbook - he’s an administrator and motivator

I have to imagine that Patriot's fans are at least excited they didn't recycle a previous NFL head coach failure.

That probably would’ve been my first preference but was unlikely from the jump. It was always going to be someone they know/are comfortable with. It’s been Mayo for over a year with a small outside shot of Vrabel
But also the post you replied to is talking specifically about Vrabel who is both not an offensive guy nor a clean break from the Belicheck era so not really sure you caught my point
