How are they allowed to do this? They didn’t even interview 1 white coach

Rooney rule can be avoided if your contractually write out your succession plan and notify the league ahead of time. I’m sorry to burst your bubble

He had a contract filed with the league office that he was going to be the next HC upon Bill's exit.

When you do that in advance, league rules stipulate that you do not need to interview anyone, regardless of race.

He's been a white hot name for like 3 years and only hasn't really tried to get hired as HC because this has been the plan

He's only been in the league for maybe 4 years...

What's funny is now he's the youngest HC.

McVay was STILL the youngest HC in the league until now, and he has been the ram's coach since 2017

Fair enough. We all know the game tho. It seemed pretty obvious to me nobody would be seriously asking why a white coach didn’t have to be interviewed. And that was kinda the point. If you already know who you want to coach your team, you shouldn’t be required to interview a black guy either

Mayo has been the defacto DC with Steve Belichick for like 2 yrs in NE.

He has been the name everyone has pointed to forever as the HC in waiting.

I'm sure he is a great coach. But passing up Vrabel for an unproven assistant is just lunacy to me.

All I know is, Kraft will install a very powerful GM/player personell staff to support Mayo, and the organization will be restructured back to a traditional separation of powers type of heirarchy.

In saying all that, I just don't understand canning Belichick to get Belichick Lite.

This is like us hiring Zach strief instead of Dennis Allen

In retrospect, would that have been a terrible thing?

I remember him at Tennessee like it was yesterday. Interesting hire but good for him

I find it strange that people think Mayo is the same ole same ole like Belicheck but Vrabel isn’t

Vrabel is exactly the guy who would cling hard to the old “patriot way”. Mayos never really shown to be that yet.

Will he though? Quick hire like this points to a GM that's already in contact with Kraft, which points to an inside hire as well.

Not saying he will be successful, but I think Mayo will be his own man.

And there is a reason why multiple teams have tried to hire him or interview him for 3 years now

Mayo is close with 1-2 of the upcoming GM prospects. They’ll pair him with a guy he’s comfortable with and has the same vision. Trey Brown is a name to watch out for

Yeah he was going to be a HC this cycle one way or another and likely would’ve been one last year if they didn’t give him the job essentially a year ahead

And Of course I’m fully aware he could be terrible, but that’s every coaching hire if you’re trying to break through a new era from BB, this is a much better sign that they are actually doing that vs doing the obvious thing and going Vrabel

I think my first preference would’ve been to completely turn the page and go for someone with an offensive mind, but if you are going defensive/internal like this, this is a much better sign for things changing than bringing in Mike Vrabel to try to recreate the 2004 patriots
