Jalen Rose: Analytics are racist

Just to be fair...I like Jalen Rose, respect his opinion, and much of the article is balanced.
He is really coming from a player perspective, and my thread title is somewhat, admittedly, inflammatory.
Have fun though.

No. 1, there are many people that feel like it has a cultural overtone to it that basically suggests that, even though I may not have played and you did, I am smarter than you, and I know some things that you don’t know, and the numbers support me, not you. Two, you notice that, when it is a powerful job in sports—whether it is an owner, whether it is a president, whether it is a general manager, whether it is a coach—usually in football and basketball, sports that are primarily dominated by black Americans, it’s also an opportunity to funnel jobs to people by saying that, “I am smarter than you because the numbers back up what I say, and I am more read. I study more. I am able to take these numbers and manipulate my point.” It’s almost like when you hear that a player doesn’t have experience at doing X job. People that normally get the jobs you are describing don’t, either. They didn’t play at most levels, but that suffices as their “experience” and validates their opportunity for power.
Just to be clear, when you say “cultural overtones,” you mean racial overtones?
Correct. And one other point I want to make with that: it is laughable to me when playing experience gets equated to any other type of experience, including coaching. When you play—for example, somebody like me, who has been playing my entire life—for some strange reason that experience gets diminished when it’s time to talk about powerful positions in sports—like, He doesn’t have experience. There is no bigger experience than being in the foxhole, in the huddles, and out on the floor—being a part of the game plan and being game-planned against. But also all the people you learn from: your teammates, the coaches, how to navigate with the media, how to navigate with the fans. Instead of it being, He doesn’t have experience, it really should be, He has more experience than almost anybody walking the earth.

In fairness, it must be frustrating for a player to have some pasty nerd tell him he plays like shite but the numbers are the numbers.

I can look at my developers and see how proficient and accurate they are with real statistical evidence.
I can't code or develop like they can, but I can use statistics to figure out which ones are better so I can pay those more.
Am I racist?

People don’t think analytics be like they is, but they do.

I actually read the article, and while your thread title really is serving the article on a platter for MSB posters who enjoy using the phrase “shut up and dribble”, Jalen really makes himself look like an idiot in this article. I have no idea why the New Yorker ran this interview. I doubt the point was to make a fairly high profile black sportscaster look like a fool. However I don’t understand how anyone could agree with Rose or think he is making insightful comments. I did like the interviewer’s analogy between analytics in sports and the new breed of political analysts like the people at 538.
I have also never understood why Jalen Rose is a well-liked and respected media figure. He is obnoxious and unintelligent.

100%.
But is it racist when some sports nerd tells a white baseball player that his numbers are not as good as he may think they are?
Rose may have a point, but by suggesting there is a racial part to it instead of simply guys that played versus guys that did not he goes too far.

He's grown on me a lot over the years. I used to hate him but I think he's gotten better.

i like his insights on players mindstate and general view of things that happen inside the sport from a players perspective. i just dont agree with many of his actual basketball takes. hes not on the same level of chauncey or garnett or pierce, but im not a big fan

Billy Beane invented racism in pro sports. Who knew?
Posted on 6/6/19 at 2:21 pm to Fun Bunch
I like the way he is thinking.
I play golf 50 times a year, so LSU's 5 golfing national championships mean more to me.
Alabama's 17 football national championships doesn't mean as much to an Alabama fan that doesn't play football.

They have “nerds” looking at all kinds of shite that young guys don’t have a clue about while the young players are just trying to bust their arse and be proud of their 7-2 record and 3.4 ERA.
