I think Pedroia will get in based on the ROY, MVP, and reputation.

Obviously he isn't a first ballot type, and his bat falling off firmly puts him in the fringe category, but gritty 2 time champion defensive wiz with RoY and MVP creds should sneak him in.

Caberra is a 1st ballot.

Buster posey is a lock, maybe not a 1st ballot but a lock

Getting in 1st ballot is hard, and also a matter of timing. the ballot is still super crowded and backlogged, so even great players have trouble getting in on the first one right now. In 10 years? Things should be a lot more cleared up.

But what usually gets you in on the first try are obvious, unimpeachable milestones. Beltre will have 3000 hits. He's in. Pujols is one of the 5 best 1st basemen ever. He's in, no problem. But I think Cabrera a problem on the 1st ballot. Same with Kershaw, if the second half of his career isn't great (he's on pace though). Pitchers are hard to project. No one though Saberhagen wouldn't get in when he was 30.

It took Biggio 3 years to get in... I wouldn't be surprised if it takes Beltre a few seasons. Again, depends on the backlog at the time as well.

Pujols should be first ballot, and Ichiro as well. Miggy and Kershaw are on pace, but still have work to do to be first ballot guys.

Trout is still too far off to say, but he certainly could be.

When I think CC Sabathia, I don't think HOF worthy, but he might have more of a case than I give him credit for. It's easy to let the last few years overshadow how good he was earlier on.

This has been explained to you before.

There wasn't a waiting period back then. Dimaggio actually recieved some votes before he even retired. The backlog of players before the HOF was created meant that a number of guys had to wait a few years to be inducted. Then the 5 year rule was implemented to help clear the backlog.

Bumgarner has to be on this list, no?

I would say no, he only has 100 wins, less than 1500Ks and his ERA is 2.99, with zero Cy Youngs

Put him on the list with guys like Sale, Bryant, Correa, Altuve, Goldschmidt, Rizzo, Arenado, Stanton and many others with HOF talent, but still way too early in their careers to call them probable.

Josh Donaldson is interesting. He may have spent too much time in the minors to compile the stats for the HOF. He has nice advanced per year stats, but unless he continues producing way past normal prime years his volume stats aren't going to look HOF worthy.

Unless Donaldson is one of those rare guys who can keep up production in his late 30s, his numbers probably aren't going to get there. Will he even get 2000 hits? He is 31 and only has 792 hits.

Bumgarner has way more skins on the wall then any of those guys.

He has 3 rings and a .25 ERA in 36 world series innings. He's a top 5 postseason pitcher of all time, arguably.

True, but he's still not even close in the first ballot HOF lock discussion.

If this was football and we overrated championships, you would have more of a point. Thankfully, that's not how the baseball HOF typically works

Votto should be a no brainer 1st ballot, but for some reason, he is historically under appreciated.

well, he doesn't have the counting stats yet to even sniff 1st ballot. shite he hasnt even passed Todd Helton yet. He's spent too many years letting close pitches go by.

Votto turns 34 in 2 months and is 53 HR's away from.... 300.. Should be break down, he's signed through 2023 so he's stuck on his NL team barring a trade, albeit in a hitters park.

He'll likely hit the WAR threshold within a few years, but i think he'll have to at least get to 400 HR

my point was pretty cut and dry, and it had nothing to do with me thinking Bumgarner is already a HOF player based on his postseason numbers alone.

I'm with you on Votto... he's not there yet and seems like a real long shot at first ballot unless he plays until 40 without a drop off or injuries. Even then his counting stats are unlikely to catch up to HOF levels. He's not getting to 3000 hits, 1500 runs, 500 HR, or 1500 RBI.

He's been on some shitty teams. Dude should have had some 130+ Run seasons by now.
