I personally dislike the "Suns". One of the dumbest names ever IMO

The Houston Texans is the worst.

It has to be one of the laziest, most uninspiring team names ever.

I always thought just calling them the Phoenix Sun would be much better.

Athletics is a pretty terrible name. My wife reminded me of this about 40 times while watching Moneyball the other night

Redskins is one of the great nicknames Mr PC

It has nothing to do with PC, it has to do with the fact it is illogical and stupid. The mascot references the Boston Tea Party. the team moved from Boston and kept the localized nickname. It's in the same category as the Hornets, Lakers, and Jazz on the list of awful nicknames: it is a local reference to someplace else.

Those are the worst nicknames because:
A) they are lazy
B) they advertise that the team moved
C) they ae the total opposite of a good mascot -one that makes a local reference

If you move a team and keep the mascot, you deserve to rot in hell for crimes against sports.

What if you move the team change the name but keep the orginal from being used by the city when they get a new team. *cough* Bud Adams.

The Irsyas did both. Took the name and the n refused to let Baltimore have it back when they got a team.

Scoreboard on suffering.

No mention of the Colts? A bunch of baby horses, or horse babies. Anyways, Broncos sounds way better if you want to go with a horse nickname.

Others not mentioned yet
Clippers
Nets
Nuggets
Bills
Islanders

A baby horse is a foal. A colt is a horse under 4, when they are in their prime.

I like it. It was a good name for when the team was in San Diego, as that was the famous boat of the area, but I'm sure those boats were prevalent in L.A. as well.

That's a tough call, on the 1 hand, at least Bud didn't keep the name, Tennessee Oilers would be up there with bad names, but to not let Houston keep the name and history blows. Losing the Colts history for Balt is even worse and Colts makes more sense in Balt, only place it might be better is Louisville.

All leagues should keep franchise history prior to move with the original city.

ETA: Also it makes no sense to me to not WANT to change the name. From a MDSE stand point, new name, colors and mascot to fo with a new city seems like a no brainer!

It's a much better nickname than the Canadians, Senators, Jets, Flames, Oilers, and Canucks.

The Ottawa Senators makes sense since Ottawa is Canada's capital (much like the old Washington Senators of the MLB). Edmonton Oilers also makes sense since Alberta is a major oil-producing province.

I am a Texans fan and I think the Texans name is cheesy. The logo is great, but the name Texans restricts their marketing IMO.

Agree with this. Coulda been the Bulls or Stampede, while I'm not a fan of Stampede as a name either of those would have allowed for the same logo.

What I really wanted though was something space related to go along with the Rockets and the Astros.

Anyway back to the topic, I've always thought the Minnesota Wild was pretty stupid.

Apollos was one of the finalist, I liked that in keeping with the Space City theme. Toros would have been better with the logo (which is bad arse)

As a rule I don't like singular nick names (Wild, Stampede, Heat) etc.

Yeah I've always thought it was a great name. I'm also pretty sure clippers played a huge part in the gold rush due to their ability to transport men and supplies at high speeds. Makes way more sense than Lakers.

I've always hated that...when MLS started, they were hell bent on just copying everything they saw overseas down to a tee..

man, its actually the complete opposite!

When MLS started, they basically said frick off to all soccer traditions throughout the world and tried to make it Americanized. They got rid of pk's and instead had penalty shootouts similar to hockey. Instead of the fall to spring regular season, they put it from spring into summer ending in the fall.

And as for the names, they were definitely not similar to european names. That trend has only happened in the last decade. Dallas FC was originally the Dallas Burn. Sporting Kansas City started off as the Kansas City Wizards. Real Salt Lake only came into MLS about 5 or 6 years ago, they weren't one of the original teams. Original team names consisted of LA Galaxy, Chicago Burn, San Jose Earthquakes. None of which are close to European soccer team names.
