re: Is the Luca Doncic trade the worst in sports history?

I know it was two different trades

Let's go back to the 80's. Before George Bush became president, he was involved in the worst sports trade ever. In 1989, the Texas Rangers traded Sammy Sosa, along with pitcher Wilson Álvarez and infielder Scott Fletcher, to the Chicago White Sox.
In return, the Rangers got Harold Baines and Fred Manrique. At the time, George W. Bush was part of the Rangers’ ownership group and a managing partner.

The Rangers got a hall of famer and the White Sox didn’t

Not the worst trade in history but the most recent worst trade is Joe Dumars giving up an unprotected 1st for Derrick Queen
It’s only bad because we suck… if we were even .500 it wouldn’t be that big a deal

But, you didn’t know it was two division titles.

Does it matter? I knew damn well the Cubs didn't get any rings out of those trades.

he didn’t want to be in Dallas and he was always out of shape
100% not true. Everything from Mavs insiders was how hurt he was and he wanted to retire a Mav. He moved here to America at 18 and Dallas embraced him and he loved the city.
He got married and had a kid here. He was almost done building his dream home when he was traded.
Even Dirk said Luka told him he never imagined playing for another team

Why are you still pretending to be a laker fan?

It was a salary dump. Mavs didn’t want to pay fat Luka $350 mill max extension. So they dealt him.
Not wanting to pay Luka $75-$80 mill a year for his years nearing and over age 30 was a justifiable decision

Not at all. The Mavericks and Lakers have won the exact same amount of playoff series since the trade.
Kyrie tore his ACL and that threw a wrench in things. They got the #1 overall pick and Anthony Davis.

I don’t think its the worst trade, jury is still out
Luka made Mavs better but it came with downside. He always came in out of shape and minor injuries started piling up. But Mavs made it work because Kyrie was ok playing 2nd fiddle and rest of team 3rd fiddle.
Luka is very ball dependent and less system focused. Teammates have to accept Luka will ball hog snd get his stats but teammates won’t.
That changes as LBJ comes back plus Reaves. Luka will do just enough assisting to keep them semi happy. But not get them over the hump.
Luka will age out faster than most. Injuries will catch up.

Something going on behind the scenes was the reason for the Luka trade. My guess is Doncic demanded the trade, specifically requesting LA as they needed a new franchise player to keep the ship afloat with Bron on his way out and AD’s unreliability. And the entire league agreed with the sentiment due to how important the Lakers brand is given revenue sharing
The alternative is his drinking/partying had gotten so out of control the Mavs shipped him off to play to play with LeBron, one of the few players Luka will listen to, to see if LeBron can get him straight before he spiraled into full blown alcoholism

Doncic would have to win a title in LA first IMHO to force the argument that it could or might be. And still not sure it could be argued as such.
They got their arse whipped in the first round of the playoffs last year so he'll have to improve on that. It can't just be the other team involved in the trade not doing well, the team that supposedly benefitted from said worse trade has to do better than 7th in the west and getting blasted and embarrassed in the first round of the playoffs.

Where was he partying? Where are you getting this from?

Literally any Mavs forum, any time Luka was seen out in public, he always had a beer in his hands. He was even drinking in the locker room after games and throughout the Olympics. How else could someone stay 40 lbs overweight while playing 35+ MPG for a full NBA season?

No it’s not, because PG going to the Clippers is the main reason they got Kawhi as well.

Luka could be drinking beer instead of water during the games, and it would still be an abominable trade.

quote:Nico needed to go, but let's not gloss over the fact that the new owner of the Mavs, with no prior experience in the sport, flexed their elbows and agreed to the trade. They are never, EVER going to get the Mav's fans respect and I fully expect fans to vocally and visually voice their desire to see the owners sell the team and get the frick out of Dallas. Fans got Nico fired. Fans can stop buying team merchandise and slow roll their attendance. There's a growing ground roots effort from fans to make the new owners, the Adelsons, uncomfortable in Dallas.
I don’t think anything touches the Luca trade and I think firing the man who made it 9 months later is proof of that…
