“What makes him a Hall of Famer in my eyes is when the postseason comes around—and granted, I get it, it’s the Patriots, they get there more often—[but] he is one of the most clutch wide receivers I have ever seen,” Burleson said on CBS’ postgame show. “Check the numbers.”

The numbers back up that case surprisingly well. Edelman entered Sunday as one of two players (along with Rice) with more than 100 catches in the playoffs, and after Edelman’s 141-yard performance on Sunday, he moved to second in playoff receiving yards behind Rice. It’s wild when anyone is mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Rice, considering how utterly untouchable Rice’s regular-season records are, but it’s even wilder to realize nobody stands between Rice and Edelman.

Edelman moved to no. 1 all time in playoff targets on Sunday, so it’s not shocking he is second all time in playoff receiving yards or catches. But the volume of targets actually obscures Edelman’s efficiency. Among wide receivers who have played seven or more playoff games, Edelman is 13th all time in receiving yards per game, behind Michael Irvin and ahead of Rice. That’s pretty high, but if we start counting from 2013, when Edelman truly took over as a primary receiving option after Wes Welker’s departure—Edelman had 14 targets in five playoff games as a do-it-all role player from 2009 to 2012 while still learning the position as a convert from quarterback—Edelman’s receiving yards per playoff game jumps to just about 103 yards per game, putting him just behind Larry Fitzgerald and Julio Jones for third all time.

There’s also the intangible factor that Edelman is just clutch—a gamer, if you will.

The radio talk shows are destroying this today. I think S showed Dwayne Bowe has similar stats in another thread. Somebody said he is basically the new Deion Branch. The one I heard at lunch is if Ike Bruce isn't in the hall of fame, you can't have Edelman in there.

No. He may get in due to post season heroics, but it would be solidly in the "fame" category instead of "deserving through elite stats".

I think he bloomed too late to have a shot. Welker and injuries were blocking his development for the first 4 years of his career

If you make the “can’t tell the story of the NFL without him” type argument he has a better shot but stats don’t match up and the WR position is already hard as frick to get in

Certainly a Pats hall of famer and will be slamming supermodels for the rest of his life so I’m not sure he cares

Maybe if he has 4-5 years of 100/1000 he could get in. He's already 32 and has missed a good bit of time with injuries, so that's doubtful.

I love me some Jules but no he is not. A really good player that has become clutch in big games but he doesn’t have the stats to warrant a gold jacket.

Was he a dominant player at his position (slot) for his era/tenure? Yes.

Did he consistently contribute significantly to his teams regular season and post season success? Yes. 3 Super Bowl rings sure help his cause.

Who knows whether he gets in or not, he is still an active player and is not done.

Should he be seriously considered? No question.

For slot receivers, absolutely HOWEVER I have no clue what that means for first-ballot purposes he's just really consistent and great within the slot receiver category, might ultimately depend on who comprises the inductee finalist class with him we shall see

If Lynn Swann is in for a couple catches, why not?

Took him over a decade to get inducted which I thought was absurd, dude had tremendous hands, tremendous body control, and always performed at the highest level in the big games, dude contributed some of the most iconic Super Bowl plays in the game's history over the course of 3 Super Bowls (X, XIII, XIV)
