Is defense losing its importance in football?

IDK if the stats back it up or not, but it seems like offenses are getting better and better at scoring points. This goes for both the NFL and college.
I could be way off, but it just feels like offenses are getting better and better and defensive ability can't keep up.

If you watched the MNF game tonight you would know the answer to this question already.

The Falcons gave up almost the same amount of yards tonight as the Seahawks have in their last 3 games combined. As far as Green Bay, I don't think they're winning the Super Bowl trotting out that defense in the playoffs.

special teams and defense are still important. Just look at the Super Bowl between the Broncos-Seahawks and the NC game between Florida St-Auburn.
I get what you're saying but they still matter.

It seems like it's becoming harder and harder to scheme against the offenses of today's game. Sometimes, even if you scheme right, the offense still makes the play (back shoulder fade is one example of this).
I think the spread offenses of college have some to do with it. They recruit all of these great high school athletes to become a star in their offense, and it takes a lot of players that could be defensive stars and they become offensive playmakers.
That, and the rule changes allow the offense to do so much now.

The game has evolved from the point where you can win entirely on defense like the 2000 ravens, 1990 giants, etc. But not yet to the level where you can win with no defense. If the packers play defense like they did tonight their stay in the playoffs will be a short one

but a defense that shutdown the closest thing to what a NFL offense is these days when they played Buffalo in Super Bowl XXV

Rule changes are a very big part of this in both college and pro. You may have to hold someone to 20 instead of 10 on average to have a good D, but it is still important.

Of course it is, didn't your mothers tell you to keep your hands to yourself?
And if you want the offense to stop you should ask politely.

Seattle says hi
Every time the #1 offense has faced the #1 defense in the Superbowl, the team with the top defense won. Every. Single. Time.
SB 13 (Steelers #1 defense beat Cowboys #1 offense)
SB 19 (49ers #1 defense beats the Dolphins #1 offense)
SB 25 (Giants #1 defense beats the Bills #1 offense)
SB 27 (Cowboys #1 defense beats the Bills #1 offense)
SB 35 (Ravens #1 defense beats the Giants #1 offense)
SB 37 (Bucs #1 defense beats the Raiders #1 offense)
SB 48 (Seahawks #1 defense beats the Broncos #1 offense)
Additionally, the team with the better defense going into the game is 34-14 in the Superbowl overall.

Technically not true, two teams have won the Superbowl with defenses ranked 28th or worse.

And they were both turn over machines and both of those defenses had clutch factors.

This, if the defense is shitty overall, then they at least force turnovers and create more possessions for the offense.

The evolution in the game has been due to rule changes moreso than anything else IMO. Every step towards flag football takes away from the defenses ability to disrupt plays and play decisively. The D can't play as fast anymore because they can longer just react. The biggest difference I've seen is the whole defenseless receiver rule in the NFL. 10 years ago, a WR that would go across the middle was highly valued because of what he could bring to an offense in applying pressure to a defense. This rule makes it so that any receiver can. The call on the Pats last night when the pick was called back is a great example.

Don't know if I'm off-base with this, but I think it brings in more viewers. Casual sports fans, at least the ones I know, don't care much for defense. That goes for any sport.
And I think the NFL has realized this, at least a little bit, with the abundance of new defensive rules.
More points, more viewers, more money.

Defense is still important. They just don't dominate like they used to. The bar is being lowered for defense, but you can't win without getting more stops than the other team.

Defense if anything has become more important

I know that's their corporate group-think, but I think they have miscalculated. I think they have caused their true core of fans' love for the NFL to be diminished a great deal. I'm a perfect example. I used to watch every game on TV. Now? If it's bad weather outside or I just happen to be home when the Dolphins are on, I'll watch.
The new "safety" rules have made the NFL borderline unwatchable.
